Prodeus: A solid AA retro-boomer shooter

Before I jump into this somewhat... salute of a post, here's the description for Prodeus:

"Prodeus is a first-person shooter of old, re-imagined using modern rendering techniques. It reaches the quality you expect from a AAA experience while adhering to some of the aesthetic technical limits of older hardware.

The game features a hand-crafted campaign from industry FPS veterans, a fully-integrated level editor, and a built-in community map browser for instantaneous action with nearly limitless levels to play.

Get ready to paint the walls red. This is the Boomer Shooter you've been waiting for." - Humble Games

For the most part, I have no issue with this description, but... AAA... I wrestle with that. Don't get me wrong, it looks wrong, and I love what the indie team did here (shout out to Bounding Box Software Inc.), but I'd say it's more of a AA experience. My A.A. stands for affordably awesome because you can grab this game for less than 50% of the standard $59.99 shooter that tops the SRP.

I would've gone for 'Retro-AAA' (which they kinda sorta did), but despite how smooth the gameplay is... it still feels a bit rough in some areas like a number of AA games do (i.e. level transition). I shrug at the melting screen when it comes to transitions, but I can do without it and the loading screen from one area to the next. I know they wanted to give that retro feel, but... I don't think loading was necessary unless the levels are segmented to a certain degree that requires it.

The initial opening was beautiful, and even if I wouldn't expect every area to be like... that, it proves they have the know-how to deliver transitions in an alternative way. That melting transition screen could've been saved for the end of the levels or something. Doesn't break the game, and they did say, "...a AAA experience while adhering to some of the aesthetic technical limits of older hardware", but they also said, "It reaches the quality". I'd just give it a full-stop AA and surprise gamers with those AAA-worthy experiences the game reaches regarding the quality.

Overall, awesome shooting game that plays extremely smooth at a nice price... with plenty of replay value + level design fun. This isn't for kids, it's rated Mature for ages 17+... and is full of bloody gunplay action that one would expect from games like... Doom. So if this is up your alley, check it out here and... game on!

King of Fighters XIV + KOF vs Persona? + 15 Minutes of DOOM!

Would this be sick... or would this be sick? It isn't real... but
who knows, we may see a versus from ATLUS & SNK soon enough.

I am excited about a new King of Fighters game (especially with ATLUS in the fold)... I just don't want it to have DLC... for sale. While ATLUS should bring the franchise increased support (even out of curiousity), King of Fighters XIV can make a power move back into a slot of what can be considered... a household name if the game is awesome and is known for delivering a complete package (or at least one that doesn't need additional purchases for the entire experience.

I don't want to say that it wouldn't be without DLC, but the ability to have everything for the game you've purchased without buying additional... would be a win in my book. Look at the various fighting games that require additional purchases to gain characters, etc. Now... compare a complete package versus one that... can be completed for an additional price.

They have an opportunity to take KOF to a new level. A level it should be after all these years (which should include loosening up some characters).

Considering the fact that KOFXIV is being brought to us by (SEGA) ATLUS, it would be sick to see some crossover VS action like... KOF vs Persona Arena perhaps.

Plus, for the Week Following Launch, the Classic Kyo DLC Costume will be Free!

Oh, and Two New Videos!

The old guard of SNK's THE KING OF FIGHTERS series shows off their new 3D look while repping Team Japan in THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIV in the latest trailer.

Series mainstays Kyo, Benimaru, and Daimon are looking bigger, badder, and beastlier than ever thanks to the 3D graphical upgrade in KOF XIV, and with this latest trailer, you'll get a sample of Kyo's fiery power, Benimaru's electric speed, and Daimon's well...let's just say that you don't want to make him angry (unless you like being on the receiving end of devastating tech throw combos).

And in case you missed it the last time around, here are the top-line refinements for THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIV:

  • 3D Evolution: All 50 fighters, movesets and more are rendered in full 3D graphics that preserves the essence of KOF's visual style but updates it with a whole new dimension.
  • The Best Refinement since KOF '98: Through extensive playtesting and balancing, the controls have been streamlined, and the Combo and Max Mode mechanics have been overhauled to create the most competitive fighter in SNK's history.
  • The KOF Saga Continues: There's a robust single-player storyline where several years have passed since the previous KOF tournament. Now a worldwide business, the global KOF will decide who is the strongest as both individuals and companies with their own ambitions have come to compete. Players compete against CPU-controlled opponents to unlock the storyline.
  • The Best Roster Yet: There are 50 fighters total, with 31 returning from previous entries into the KOF series, and 19 brand new characters. All 50 characters will be available at the game's launch.
  • Revamped Online Experience: THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIVhas devoted a lot of development time to improving the game's netcode for vastly improved online gameplay. KOF XIV uses the PS4's online architecture to have a whole host of online conveniences, from spectating to saving replay/battle data, and having a single online KOF XIV profile to connect with friends.
The game will be $59.99/CA$79.99 at launch. Pre-orders and a limited number of launch editions will arrive in this special SteelBook™ case. Plus, for the week following launch, the Classic Kyo costume DLC will be free to all players!

Also, Koch Media Will Be Publishing KOF XIV in Europe! You heard right, for our European fans waiting for news with bated breath, our friends at Deep Silver announced earlier today that they'll be publishing THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIV in Europe, complete with SteelBook® case for pre-orders and limited launch copies!
The scratch-happy Team Yagami is looking to win it all in THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIV's newest trailer.
Diehard fans of KOF will recognize Iori Yagami, Mature, and Vice from the early games, but they sure look fine, fresh, and fierce showing off their skills in 3D. The trailer showcases the scorching purple fury of Iori, the dizzying brutality of Vice, and vicious cat-like clawing of Mature. Watch the bad girls and boy of Team Yagami dish out some brutal combos to the sweet sultry sounds of "Saxophone Under the Moon"!

Doom is coming + VR Action + BLACKROOM: Holograms gone bad!

Are your palms sweating already?

Games release on various days... but I like what Bethesda is doing with DOOM specifically releasing it on a Friday the 13th. I have never mentioned this before but I really enjoyed these days as a kid... not from a Goth point of view, but because of all the horror movies that would be shown on TV.

So I think that they picked one if not the best release date (beyond Halloween) for this game. Friday the 13th always had that Halloween feel anyway, minus the costumes & candy that some of us would indulge in.

At this time... we don't know if DOOM has or will have VR support, but... DOOM has an incredibly dedicated community and... I think that in the name of that community there should be VR. Bethesda should do a poll. Anyway, if you want in on doom at the price in the image... check it out here.

Speaking of VR, if you don't have a sound proof room to game in, a mouth gag in place, or you simply don't know how to use... your indoor voice... it might not be the best move to play a horror game.

Perfect example is the girl playing a horror game in VR in this video... jeez.

By the way... the creators of Doom (John Romero & Adrian Carmack) are back at it again... working on a new FPS titled "Blackroom" (at least at this time) taking a more... holographic approach. They are seeking $700k worth of help via KickStarter and if you'd like to see them bring this game to life... check it out. They want to go back with this game... as long as that doesn't mean visually and movement wise because some of the older games are really stiff. They are allowing you to create your own maps, run your own dedicated servers and mod it up on PC. John Romero reminds me of one of those old school rock fans/gamers keeping old school... kick a** alive and well.

To keep the VR action going... check out this announcement trailer for a PvP VR survival experience titled "Detach" and... Pre-Order here for $20.34 (USD) if you fancy.

Want in on DOOM? Now's your chance to jump in on the FREE beta!

I wouldn't expect a beta to be anything... except free, but at least this game doesn't hold the beta hostage behind a pre-order. Especially if it helps the developer, so... thumbs up, check out the trailer below and follow the link to get your game on!
