XDefiant is almost here... is your system ready? Let's check the specs!

If you're not familiar with the upcoming free to play 6v6 shooter... let's break it down a bit, AFTER this trailer (and then we'll get into the specs):

XDefiant is a free-to-play, first-person arena shooter developed by Ubisoft San Francisco. In this fast-paced online game, you compete for the W in 6v6 matches. The gameplay is reminiscent of Call of Duty multiplayer action, which some have even called the COD killer, and it features playable character classes from various factions across Ubisoft franchises. While I won't call it the COD killer, it will certainly pull gamers in Ubisoft's direction. And don't get it twisted if you aren't familiar with Ubisoft shooters, the publisher is far from being a noob to all this (hence the mention of factions from different Ubisoft Franchises). This game basically serves up a crazy cross over shooter that reminds me of... Ghost Recon Wildlands, but and all the features it had, but who knows what future factions will be in this FPS game?

I'm definitely intereested in giving it a whirl, and my fingers are crossed that it's packed with fun factor, it's not a hacker's paradise, and bugs are at a minimum. You can play XDefiant on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The release date is set for May 21, 2024

That said, here are the specs. Can your PC run it?

These specs were provided by Ubisoft via their @PlayXDefiant X (aka Twitter) account.

PARIS -- March 30, 2023 -- New World Interactive and Focus Entertainment are excited to celebrate Insurgency: Sandstorm’s fourth birthday by paying tribute to our incredible community of players. Update 1.14, “Operation: Accolade,” is the fourth and final major content update in the Year 2 Pass, available for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

“Operation: Accolade” adds a new map, weapons, and character cosmetics, all as a free update. Premium DLC cosmetics are also now available for individual purchase, as well as for those who have purchased the game’s Year 2 Pass or Gold Edition.

Take up arms and prepare to fight under the glow of the golden hour in Last Light, a new map adapted from the fan-favorite submission to the Insurgency: Sandstorm mapping contest. New elements include the ability to enter and utilize building interiors, in addition to an entirely new marine yacht area, completing the luxurious coastal town atmosphere.

Engage in close-to-medium-quarters combat through the streets of a Monte Carlo-like setting with your new weapons: the Micro Dynamic Rifle (MDR) and the SG 552. The MDR for Security is an American bullpup modular rifle; the Swiss-manufactured SG 552 for Insurgents, meanwhile, is well known for its ease of use and versatility.

  • New Security Weapon: MDR
  • New Insurgents Weapon: SG 552

May produced another loss for Game sales according to NPD group, but...

Even if sales are down, I think developers can still make a difference. You have to make sure games are released without issues and meet gamers where they are, I'm not saying pump out free games (though we post about freebies on SDGT's FB Page), but... pricing has to be reconsidered among other things.

Want to adapt to the situation? Take creative approaches to make more affordable games that don't hit the budget as hard... and make the fun factor huge. AAA games are still welcome, but there are plenty being delayed because of the resources required. Mid to small titles are still welcome (so get creative), and... DLC is always welcome in an already complete and well-rounded game.

By the way, we've also mentioned something a while ago in terms of meeting gamers where they are, and those are specs. Hunt: Showdown was highlighted at that time as an example, the specs weren't going to open them up to as many people as possible... but more and more games pile into that boat when visually impressive games have run on less (which is primarily a PC gamer issue to worry about and is one of the reasons some gamers stick with console).

Hunt: Showdown requires a minimum for the Graphics card & CPU:

AMD Radeon R7 370 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 TI Graphics Card

AMD Ryzen 3 1200 or Intel i5-4590 @ 3.3GHz (4th Gen) CPU

This isn't a dig at PC gamers at all, game on how you game on... but it's a valid reason why some gamers don't even bother with PC because they want a game to just... work (without running into compatibility issues). We can argue bugs on console... but that's not what I'm referring to here, and bugs can fall on either side since they're not exclusive to console.

By the way, I was talking with someone locally who said, "Well if their PC sucks, it's not my problem because my rig is sick... I can play just fine...". He went into bragging about his specs, but... being part of that smaller collective who can play a game isn't a win for the developer or even the gamers in this category. A smaller player base = fewer people to play with, and... that's less support for the developer.

Supply is limited due to shortages that emerged during the pandemic, so it's only going to increase the need for gamers to remain where they are and game at the current specs for the sake of not breaking the bank... if they can't afford to pay for the upgrades or get a new PC like the Alienware Aurora R13.

Here are a few games that missed out on sales because they required a little too much juice for PC users (this doesn't represent the totality of the player base, but don't ignore things like this):

Elden Ring - 25% of PC users who inquired about compatibility were able to meet the minimum requirements, which left 75% unable to meet them... out of nearly 88,000 PC Gamers!

Call of Duty: Warzone - 34% met the minimum requirements while 66% failed. This wasn't as large of a group as Elden Ring, but still a large enough number at 46,000+ PC Gamers.

Phasmophobia - 24% met the minimum requirement, while 76% failed out of 11,181 systems checked. Special thanks to the Husdawg Team for the data, and truth be told... those that failed don't always just stick to those specs.

Even with NPD groups claims that sales were down before the pandemic, I think it's worth remaining optimistic as a developer... just remember to play your cards right with gamers in mind. You see the information above, it's not always about the cost of the game (which applies to consoles as well)... it might also be the cost of the compatibility (for PC gamers).

How To: Pairing your Controller to your Phone

After our recent COD: Mobile review... some of you were wondering how you pair game controllers with your device. I even connected one for an older gamer (game on!)... so I figured this could be useful to some of you. These are the two I've paired... so I'm going to focus on the PS4 controller and the Xbox controller (I connected to Android phones).

  • Start off by making sure your PS4 controller isn't paired to your... PS4.
  • Go to your phone settings by swiping up through your icons until you see the little cog icon marked "Settings" or swipe down at the top of the screen to show the dropdown menu. That should have a little cog icon as well.
  • Go to "Bluetooth & device connection".
  • Turn on your Bluetooth (Duh of the day)
  • Select "Pair new device"
  • Grab your PS4 controller and press the "Share" button and the Playstation "Home" button (the one with the Playstation logo) and hold them both until the player light on the top of your controller begins to blink... then you're ready to pair.
  • Once you see "Wireless Controller" or equivalent, press it to pair and... you're ready to game!!!
  • If you don't see "Wireless Controller" or something similar in name pop up, refresh, or go back and then click on "Pair new device" again.

  • Start off by making sure your Xbox controller isn't paired to your... Xbox or PC.
  • Go to your phone settings as mentioned above.
  • Go to "Bluetooth & device connection".
  • Turn on your Bluetooth.
  • Select "Pair new device"
  • Grab your Xbox (One/PC) wireless controller and turn it on by pressing the Xbox "Home" button represented by the Xbox logo. (This is a little simpler than the PS4 pairing.)
  • Once you see "Xbox Wireless Controller" press it to pair and... you're also ready to game!!!
  • If this didn't prove successful, follow the step above highlighted in yellow... but you will be looking for "Xbox Wireless Controller".
Some of you might think... duh, but everyone isn't you or me. There are parents, grandparents, and others looking for solutions like this to bring a little light to someone who may not be able to afford a console (medical bills can mount up quick).

This can also be a great option for gamers (kids to adults) in and out of the hospital for treatments like dialysis, chemotherapy, and more. So with that said, share the link... and give the gift of gaming in the new year! HAPPY 2020!
