Who is Chun Li?

Chun‐Li's actual name is Mandarin; Chun means "spring", Li means "beautiful", so she can actually be considered... the beauty of spring or a beautiful spring. She's the very first female character in Capcom's Street Fighter franchise. Chun-Li was introduced in 1991's Street Fighter II and... remained the only female character in Street Fighter until 1997's Street Fighter III: New Generation.

Now... before you get ready to try and argue that down, remember... this is the main Street Fighter franchise. Of course, you have Street Fighter Alpha, but we aren't talking spin-offs (even though I love it and still own it on the PS1).

Chun-Li came into the game on a mission to avenge her father after the notorious psycho-powered M. Bison and his Shadaloo soldiers took him out. The other players were cool, but what also got my attention was that she was also an undercover Interpol agent. Her father was also in law enforcement and taught her martial artists, which she continued the trend by teaching young children after she temporarily retired. She put the badge back on when one of her students was abducted.

I still think that Capcom should do a fully animated film around Chun-Li's come up because her story is just that interesting, they could do it for them all but... I just think it would be solid. I'm not hating on Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, but... I want a full-fledged animation that gives the beauty of spring... justice!

After Street Fighter II rose to fame, Chun‐Li became one of gaming's most well-known characters and is depicted in some of the series' side projects, including films, comic books, and merchandise.

How many of you tried to do her kicks in real life? Come on... be honest. Oh, by the way, her qipao is worn to pay tribute to her late more who passed away when she was a child.

While not as actually amazing as different characters, Chun‐Li was by a wide margin the speediest. - Chika

I disagree with this comment from Chika. Chun-Li has an awesome skillset and in the right hands, she can dominate in tournaments. I'm not even saying that to diss any of your favorite Street Fighter characters, but... she has a solid skillset too, and she's easy on the eyes for plenty of gamers.

When it comes to her looks, her physique is actually based on the other characters (in the beginning). Initially, she was designed to look strong so that it would make sense to have her in Street Fighter taking on the male competition.

She got thicker in the thighs in later installments because the character designer is into thick women and is attracted to the thighs like Chun-Li has. Nothing wrong with that, a variety in character body types goes a long way and gives motivation to women and girls who may have a similar body type.

Overall, Chun-Li is a kickass character able to hold her own in a fight and definitely represents one of the good gals when it comes to fighting against the baddies. Hopefully the first lady of Street Fighter can get her own anime film showing her back story from the ups and downs in childhood, leaning Kempo, becoming an Interpol agent, growing up with her dad taking on Shadaloo, avenging her dad and training children in martial arts. Maybe we'll get something like that one of these days but in the mean time... game on.

Who is Bayonetta?

Bayonetta... that's who! Bayonetta... aka the Famed Witch... aka the Umbra Witch (if you're nasty)... aka just stay on her good side or she'll bust a barrage of caps in your... aaaannnnyway... you get the idea.

Despite her villain'sh look... she's a female protagonist who will go down in history for being quite the... badass heroine.

Bayonetta's actual name is Cereza (which is actually really nice), born in December of 1411 to a Witch and a Lumen Sage, she is one of two surviving Umbra Witches.

Bayonetta is a looker, and that's what initially lured a lot of her fans in... but... I'm glad that wasn't the only thing that kept them going back for more (I salute the developers for giving her real substance). Luckily her looks weren't just for... looks either, her hair also doubles as a weapon (using a variety of weave techniques) adding to the list of what makes her an overall well-equipped hero.

Bayonetta was trained by an Umbran Elder and is highly skilled in the Bullet Arts. She's strapped from head to toe... literally, just take a look at her signature heels with guns strapped to the back. For the ladies wondering just how comfy these heels are... you'd have to ask your local cosplay professional. :p

Anyway, Bayonetta isn't limited to gunplay, she's a witch so she can do a variety of things including slow down time, transform into different beasts via her witchcraft, summon things like a dragon of death, and also use other weapons... well (like I said, badass). Just to touch on her ability to slow down time for a second, could you imagine the things you could get down with a power like that? Forget about ever being late for work.

She's super athletic, which makes her even more capable of pulling these things off, and I'm sure if someone ever decides to bring her awesomeness to the big screen in motion picture form... it will require someone with the ability to keep up just to stay in character. Otherwise, just go CGI and keep it moving. By the way, If you didn't know... there is a 2014 anime film titled, Bayonetta: Bloody Fate.

There was a bit of drama when her new look was revealed for the second installment of the action-packed franchise... but I don't remember the last time I've heard a complaint. Bayonetta's short haircut was decided on by the devs to give her a more "masculine" look... for whatever reason.

I didn't jump in the debates about why she should maintain her old look or embrace the new look. People can get a bit crazy about fictional characters, and I had no time for crazy emails trying to argue down "my" opinion. I did find it interesting though because arguments about her look... went into the weird-er category about why no one attracted to women should be attracted to a female character because it's offensive to women (even if that's how attraction works). This isn't an argument presented by all women, because there are countless women who appreciate their beauty being appreciated... but (yeah) the arguments were getting crazy.

One of the points I found relevant enough to speak on (here), was the one about body types and how the shapes of female characters have an unrealistic form. This can be argued for characters of multiple shapes and sizes, but it usually only takes aim and the ones that some find a bit sexier than others. I can see it being sort of intimidating to some, but I can't say that these are unrealistic body types.

They may be seen as unrealistic among some, but some of us have grown up around people with body types that can be found in some games... sooo I say that to say they're getting representation just like the representation that others also receive. If it's unrealistic to some... should the women with those shapes feel as if they're abnormal? I don't think so, that would be wrong. Before I write a book, I'll move on.

The update to her look shifted the arguments for some... granted the costume was similar (because her hair was short), but some argued that it allowed women to take the power back. Arguments began to contradict themselves and... I wasn't going to touch any of it. The only W won here was the fact that the protagonist didn't die at SEGA... which is why the Platinum Games franchise lived on through Nintendo.

Facts: "Naughty boys that stalk the ladies, never get the girl." - Bayonetta

Anyway, Bayonetta is a flashy hero with her first introduction to the world taking place in the fictional European city of Vigrid, where she awakens from a 500-year sleep with no memory of who she is. She began to get... woke over time realizing that she has a piece of jewelry representing one of two factions from her past, as she sets out to find the other. Both of these treasures are known as the eyes of the world, and she has the left one (which is red). Check out this First 30 of Bayonetta and consider diving into her world on the Nintendo Switch... where you can catch up on where she left off.

Who is Crash Bandicoot?

I've had game after game from the Crash Bandicoot franchise, but... I never paid attention to who he was as a character. I just knew that I was running through a trail dodging obstacles and collecting masks. So I wanted to find out who and what the heck he was.

When it comes to Crash Bandicoot in his earlier days... I saw him as Playstation's Mario or Sonic (after all, the franchise was a PlayStation exclusive). I know there were characters like Spyro, but... that's just how I viewed Crash at the time. Believe it or not, he was bounced around from developer to developer after his early days at Naughty Dog (which doesn't count the 5-year hiatus). By the time of this post, Crash has spun his way through 4 publishers + 9 developers. I think this exposes the risks of the IP while at the same time it reveals that Crash isn't going down without a fight.

This dude has been on Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 4, Playstation Portable, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Wii, PC, iOS, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Android, and even a platform called... Zeebo.

Anyway, to get a bit more specific about this wacky protagonist, he's actually a type of marsupial.

Crash, is a genetically enhanced bandicoot from a fictional place south of Australia... called the Wumpa Islands. That would make him a native of the land under the land down under. Right? In the fictitious Wumpa Islands, humans and mutant animals co-exist.

Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy

I had no idea what a bandicoot was, and so I did some digging and... found out that they're a small animal resembling a rat mixed with a rabbit mixed with a kangaroo. All don't look this way as there are various species of bandicoot, but I would probably be on a table if I saw one running through the office. The bandicoot is actually more related to a rabbit than a rat... just in case you were wondering.

Crash's story initially revolved around him trying to save the world by foiling the plans of the protagonists' Brio & Cortex + save his girlfriend. Not to take the focus off of Crash, but his girlfriend (Tawna) is also a female bandicoot genetically enhanced by Brio & Cortex. The dastardly duo wanted to destroy Crash because he was deemed a failed experiment.

Crash was able to fight back against Brio & Cortex with the assistance of Aku Aku, which is actually a human spirit reincarnated as a mask. Crash freed Aku Aku after escaping Cortex, and in exchange, he was able to use its magical abilities. Although Aku Aku isn't really brought up as often when the conversation of Crash emerges... I think it plays a crucial role in the Crash Bandicoot franchise.

I know that the wacky protagonist may be seen as a risky investment as far as new installments go, but... I can see Crash coming back via a reboot of the franchise. I know some of you are like "Here he goes against with these freaking reboots" but... (but but but) there is enough story to build upon and improve on. It doesn't have to feel exactly the same, but Aku Aku and the world can be remade into a truly open-world adventure... just like Super Mario. He has game after game with multiple themes on deck, and it would be sweet to see some beautiful reboot of Crash.

That said, I hope you enjoyed this installment of Who's that Protagonist, show some love at the links below, and... game on!

Who is Lee Everett?

A ton of you may be scratching your head when it comes to Lee Everett, but some of you will know who he is right off the bat. He was Clementine's father figure in the first season of the Telltale Game's Walking Dead video game franchise.

This 37 year old protagonist was a former History Professor at the University of Georgia... prior to all hell breaking loose. He wasn't exactly a professor before he crashed into the zombie apocalypse though, he was introduced to the gaming world via the back of a squad car in cuffs after being convicted for murdering a state senator who slept with his wife. Yeah... he didn't exactly start off in the brightest situation before the distracted police officer ended up crashing the squad car while trying to avoid a... walker (aka a zombie).

The zombie slaying ex-professor was born and raised in Macon, Georgia which in real life had a population of 153,095 back in 2018... so he grew up in an area that's a bit on the small side, but nothing wrong with that. His family resided in Macon, and ran a family business, but the murder of the senator... put a wedge in their relationship.

His backstory could have had a movie short in itself, wouldn't you say? So that was where his life was prior to the Apocalypse, but... my experience with this protagonist revealed that he was a really great guy who seemed to have snapped when it came to his wife's infidelity. He got my attention in this franchise... once his relation with (fellow legend) Clementine, began to sprout.

His impact on her was life changing, and I don't think she would've lasted as long if he weren't in her life for that brief period of time. The time line was longer than our play through of course... but it was still relatively short, nevertheless... their relationship was life changing for both Lee, Clementine (who we named our daughter after... IRL), and anyone else who survived the season. Decisions are in your hands... so things can go either way, but for the most part (during my play through)... rough decisions didn't throw his character off the cliff.

His guidance and the bond he made with Clementine... extended her life... making her a savior to many others and I don't want to spoil the story so i'll leave it at that. I loved their dynamic! Perhaps his experience as a teacher helped him provide more guidance to Clem, but... you have to have something in you to be a teacher in the first place.

When it came to the walkers and untrustworthy people, Lee pulled no punches... unless he had to. Not only did he do this strategic tango via the decisions we made in order to protect himself, but also it was to ensure the safety of Clementine.

I wish he would've lived on (as so many others hoped), but... he no longer had to live in that world and his memory lived on as he was honored throughout the franchise from start to finish.

He made you feel like everything was going to be just fine, even if zombies were all over the place. I appreciate Telltale Games for that because they could've did a weird push forward without mentioning him ever again... but it would've left this weird emotional void robbing the players and our audiences of the emotional connection the characters could've had by carrying on his memory. Since tale's are what Telltale specializes in telling... they made Lee and the overall franchise a memorable well rounded experience.

Who is Jill Valentine?

Who's that girl... lala-lala-lala-la-lala-lala... Jill's that girl... lala-lala-lala-la-lala-lala.

Jill Valentine is a female protagonist from the spooky... zombie infested world of Resident Evil.

She is a fictional character (duh of the day) created by Shinji Mikami... who also directed the first installment of the legendary franchise back in 1996. Where we're you in 1996? Time flies doesn't it?

Jill was a former member of Delta Force before joining S.T.A.R.S... where we picked up the controller and joined in on her fight against the infamous pharmaceutical company... the Umbrella Corporation. She was one of two playable characters, the other was her partner, Chris Redfield.

S.T.A.R.S. is short for... Special Tactics And Rescue Service, which is the position where Jill started her Resident Evil journey as the only woman who was part of Captain Wesker's Alpha Team.

Later she became an operative for a private Anti-Biohazard Service... and is now the co-founder and member of her own organization, the B.S.A.A. (Level up!) B.S.A.A. is an acronym for the "Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance".

I know that some of you will clear your throat and say that she's the first playable female in a survival horror game... but that's not true, ladies and dudes. There are games from back in day like... Friday the 13th on the NES and even Monsters ate my Neighbors on the Sega Genesis, and they have playable female characters. I wouldn't want to discredit older games.

By the way, did you know that Jill was even infected with the T-Virus?! Yep yep... but I won't give away what installment that occurred in. During this frightening time (although its frightening at all points in Resident Evil)... Jill also went through numerous biological tests by the villainous Albert Wesker. She was under mind-control and was used as a vessel to keep the T-Virus alive and well.

I digress... to present some more upbeat information about Jill. Outside of her making her film debut in Resident Evil: Apocalypse (played by Sienna Guillory), she also made the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition for 2011... as one of the Top 50 Video Game Characters of All Time!

It may sound crazy, but as of 2020... the Japanese-French American zombie slayer is... 45 years old! Nothing wrong with that... and i'm sure if Capcom keeps the story progressing with time... she's still be an incredible butt kicking machine (if the threat remains that is).

Jill Valentine has been to hell and back... and is about to go right back into the world of zombie crawling madness in the Resident Evil 3 remake! You ready?

Jill Valentine is one of the last remaining people in Raccoon City to witness the atrocities Umbrella performed. To stop her, Umbrella unleashes their ultimate secret weapon; Nemesis! Also includes Resident Evil Resistance, a new 1 vs 4 online multiplayer game set in the Resident Evil universe where four survivors face-off against a sinister Mastermind.

Who is Shantae?

Shantae is a half-genie from a magical place known as... Sequin Land. This land was formerly protected by Guardian Genies who kept it at peace for years. The Genies and humans began to get to know each other a bit better, one thing led to another and... (well) that's how Shantae was born.

Shantae's home is none other than an abandoned lighthouse... which is located in a small fishing village called, Scuttle Town. She was appointed as the Guardian Genie of this location. Her abilities vary... allowing you to transform into other forms (like animals).

There were also other half genies with limited powers... but the franchise revolves around the ever adventurous + super upbeat Shantae, who should really have her own anime series on a streaming service or something by now (I'm talking to you WayForward). The content is there to keep her going on one adventure after another. The games (seen below) can have seasons that revolve around the adventures seen in them, movies are another option based on the games or an original adventures.

Anyway, Shantae takes on characters such as Pirate Queen Risky Boots and her pirate crew, the Tinkerbats. "Risky & the Tinkerbats"... sounds like a rockband, don't you think? Risky's a regular in the franchise, so get used to seeing her... among others. The interaction between the characters is usually chock full of comedic value... which I thoroughly enjoy, so i'd be curious to see what they could come up with.

Enjoy some Shantae & The Pirate's Curse gameplay from... Suxky:

I won't get into the details of the each titles... but if you decide to jump into the games this hopefully gives you an idea of the main character. Game on!
