Ubisoft's Decision to Sunset XDefiant: A Case of Market Oversaturation?

Ubisoft's recent decision to sunset XDefiant has sparked significant discussion between those of us at SDGT, particularly around the challenges faced by multiplayer games in an oversaturated market. SDGT Entertainment has long argued that the sheer number of multiplayer titles vying for players' attention creates a precarious environment for any game running dry. With a finite number of gamers and the impossibility of replicating oneself to play multiple games simultaneously, studios must innovate to ensure the longevity of their multiplayer titles.

 The Oversaturated Multiplayer Market

The multiplayer gaming market is undeniably crowded. With established giants like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Apex Legends dominating the scene, the competition may struggle to carve out a niche. The competition is not just about creating a good game but also about sustaining player interest over time. The reality is that there are only so many gamers to go around, and each new multiplayer game dilutes the player base further.

XDefiant, Ubisoft's ambitious arcade shooter, aimed to shake up the genre with its unique factions inspired by Ubisoft franchises like Splinter Cell, The Division, and Ghost Recon. Despite its promising start and a loyal fanbase, XDefiant couldn't maintain the momentum needed to justify continued investment. The game's sunset process began on December 3rd, 2024, with new downloads, player registrations, and purchases being disabled. The servers will remain active until June 3rd, 2025, allowing players to enjoy the game a little longer.

The Option of Player-Hosted Servers

One potential solution to extend the life of multiplayer games is to allow players to host their own servers. This approach could provide a more sustainable model by reducing the burden on developers to maintain server infrastructure. However, Ubisoft has not indicated any plans to implement this for XDefiant, if they'd ever consider such a thing.

 Refunds and Player Compensation

Ubisoft has assured players that those who purchased the Ultimate Founders Pack will receive a full refund. Additionally, players who made VC and DLC purchases since November 3rd, 2024, will also be refunded. These refunds are expected to be processed within two months. While this may not completely alleviate the disappointment of the game's shutdown, it does provide some consolation to the affected players. Contact support if you haven't received a refund by January 28th, 2025!

"I know Veterans who absolutely loved kicking back playing XDefiant with their battle buddies and friends, so it's sad that this free-to-play experience is going away. It was super... accessible too, that's the part that stings the most. You could play it on console, pc, or play it on your TV without a console. If I were Ubisoft, I'd see if Amazon would be interested in having it as an exclusive shooter on Luna or something. I found myself playing the game through Luna 90+ percent of the time." - Blu

Whether through unique gameplay mechanics, community-driven content, or alternative server models, studios must adapt to the challenging landscape of multiplayer gaming or take what comes with it.

"I don't think it needs to change. Games come and go, it's just the nature of the best bruh." - Luis D. Lucha

 Alternatives to XDefiant

For those scouting out their next multiplayer experiences, here are five alternative FPS games with cross-platform multiplayer capabilities:

  1. Call of Duty: Warzone

  2. Fortnite

  3. Apex Legends

  4. Rainbow Six Siege

  5. Overwatch 2

These games offer robust multiplayer experiences and have established communities, making them excellent transitions. I'm sure this wasn't an easy decision for Ubisoft, but it's great to have options.

Apex Legends goes Mobile... but + Top 10 Rankings!

As you may have heard by now, Respawns free-to-play battle royale game (you know the one that gave EA a breath of fresh air), is coming to mobile. Now, before you get too happy thinking that you can join the crew with a little cross-play action, just know that option is off the table (at least for now).

Respawn said that the free-to-play title is designed specifically for mobile devices and won't feature cross-play. At the same time... I shrug because... who doesn't have a mobile device? We aren't just talking phones, we're talking tablets too.

The only downside I see is your stats being left behind, and the potential inability to play without a controller. They should because... c'mon, you can game with a controller on mobile devices so... why not?

Jeffrey Rousseau brought up a good point about the mobile release being a risk... just like the Nintendo Switch version and its Metacritic average, but... I just don't see that happening on mobile unless it sucks.

At the same time, there is a slew of free-to-play games on mobile... so we shall see how things go for APEX Legends Mobile. If you want in on the beta... here ya go:

Dear Developer,

I know you want this game to pop on mobile, and actually, I have to apply this to many developers. If you want your games to work on mobile and get an edge alongside your pre-existing PC + Console version... you should strongly consider connecting those stats together.

I'm not a programmer, so... I don't know how that's going to work but it hasn't stopped other games with crossplay enabled.

Think about it... sometimes your various versions rival each other. If I'm home... I'm playing on PC, I'll play on mobile when I'm away... but why can't the stats be connected if crossplay isn't on the table? One doesn't X out the other, marry the stats for everyone to see.

By the way, shout out to the top 10 players in both Rank Scores & K/D... so don't lose your mind. These rankings are based on the current leaderboards from 04.19.2021. In other words, watch out for these players as you set your sights to the top!

APEX Legends + Xbox Wireless Controller – Sport Red Special Edition

Apex Legends Hero Image

Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale game where legendary competitors fight for glory, fame, and fortune on the fringes of the Frontier. To win in the Apex Games you’ll need to stay sharp, use your wits, and keep your friends close. But victory also favors the prepared, and a few helpful tips in your pocket can be the difference between defeat and sweet, sweet triumph.
Check out these critical tips and tricks to help you kickstart your career in the Apex Games.
Apex Legends
Choose the Legend Who Matches Your Playstyle
In the Apex Arena, all competitors are equals, and the Legends are evenly matched in terms of strength, speed, and firepower. It’s their abilities that set them apart, so you’ll want to pick the Legend that matches your preferred playstyle and complements your squad.
Want to be the shield between your team and opponents? Jump into the arena as the hearty Gibraltar. How about helping your squad travel long distances to take your enemies by surprise? Pathfinder, with his trusty grappling hook, is your perfect pick. Figure out what role you like to play and try different Legends to see which fits you best.
Stay Close to Your Squad
Squadplay is critical to success in Apex Legends, where you jump into the arena with two teammates at your side. Working together, you can keep each other safe and outplay your opponents by combining your abilities. A well-placed Dimensional Rift by Wraith, for example, can put her team right on top of unsuspecting opponents, while Caustic can protect teammates by using Nox gas to drive away enemies.
Try to strike out on your own, and you’ll be up against other teams who can easily overwhelm you. Stick close to your squad, and you’ll have a greater chance at success.
Use Smart Comms to Keep in Touch with Your Teammates
You can give your teammates critical information – and vice versa – through an in-game system that lets you ping useful items and locations on their screens.
You can pinpoint the position of gear pieces (and what they are), highlight threats, and tell your teammates which direction you’re going before you’ve even plugged in a microphone. Use this to your advantage to make sure your teammates see what you see and always have the latest intel.
Apex Legends
Get Familiar with the Arena
Kings Canyon – the map where all Apex Matches take place – is a deadly playground full of abandoned military installations and encroaching nature. Learning how to maneuver, where the hotspots of activity are, and where to find the best loot are all important nuggets of knowledge.
The arena is surrounded by a giant Ring that shrinks at regular intervals throughout the match, and you’ll receive damage every second you spend outside its perimeter. Knowing your surroundings will help you make decisions faster and maneuver more effectively to avoid getting stuck outside it.
Go for the Good Stuff, But Be Careful
Different sections of the map spawn different tiers of loot – the higher your weapon or armor piece’s tier, the stronger it is. Some locations on the map are consistently full of high-tier loot, which means everyone will want to get to these spots first. The true motherlode comes packed inside dropships that land at random spots on the map, rewarding anyone who can claim them with the most powerful loot in the game.
You start each match with no weapons or armor, so you and your squad will have to decide if these high-tier caches are worth the risk each time you play. As for where they are? We’ll let you figure that out on your own.
Revive and Respawn Your Teammates
After your health is depleted, you’ll go into a downed state where you’re still alive, but slow and in need of medical attention. If you die before your teammates can help, they have one last shot to save you.
Every Legend carries a Legend Banner that they drop when they die. Only their teammates can pick these up, and taking one to a Respawn Beacon will bring that Legend back to life. Pulling off a successful resurrection can bring a team back from the brink of defeat, so don’t let the opportunity slip by.
Apex Legends
Use Jump Towers, Hot Zones, and Other Features to Your Advantage
Kings Canyon is full of semi-permanent map objects you can use to get a leg up on your opponents. Jump Towers allow you to fly into the air and skydive back down to the ground. Hot Zones give you access to higher-tier loot on a random portion of the map if you can get there first. Respawn Beacons can bring downed teammates back to life.
Whether you use them to get out of a hairy situation or take your enemies by surprise, learning how to use these features adds another layer to your team’s strategy. That’s as good as another gun in your arsenal.
Don’t Let Anything Go to Waste
Body armor, weapon attachments, and other helpful pieces of gear are all hidden across the arena for you to grab. The inventory system will automatically tell you if a weapon or piece of gear is better than what you already have and keep you from grabbing lower-tier loot. That way, you won’t risk snatching something you can’t use in a panic.
You and your teammates can help each other by calling out item locations as you spot them. The tagging system also notes an item’s rarity level, so you can snag a higher-level piece of gear that you might’ve missed otherwise. Also make sure to loot fallen enemies – they’ll drop a cache when you take them out, and often have some of the best loot. Always keep an eye out, because you never know when a single piece of armor is going to save you in the end.
Play Apex Legends for free now on Xbox One and EA's Origin we’ll see you in the arena!
