Who is Bayonetta?

Bayonetta... that's who! Bayonetta... aka the Famed Witch... aka the Umbra Witch (if you're nasty)... aka just stay on her good side or she'll bust a barrage of caps in your... aaaannnnyway... you get the idea.

Despite her villain'sh look... she's a female protagonist who will go down in history for being quite the... badass heroine.

Bayonetta's actual name is Cereza (which is actually really nice), born in December of 1411 to a Witch and a Lumen Sage, she is one of two surviving Umbra Witches.

Bayonetta is a looker, and that's what initially lured a lot of her fans in... but... I'm glad that wasn't the only thing that kept them going back for more (I salute the developers for giving her real substance). Luckily her looks weren't just for... looks either, her hair also doubles as a weapon (using a variety of weave techniques) adding to the list of what makes her an overall well-equipped hero.

Bayonetta was trained by an Umbran Elder and is highly skilled in the Bullet Arts. She's strapped from head to toe... literally, just take a look at her signature heels with guns strapped to the back. For the ladies wondering just how comfy these heels are... you'd have to ask your local cosplay professional. :p

Anyway, Bayonetta isn't limited to gunplay, she's a witch so she can do a variety of things including slow down time, transform into different beasts via her witchcraft, summon things like a dragon of death, and also use other weapons... well (like I said, badass). Just to touch on her ability to slow down time for a second, could you imagine the things you could get down with a power like that? Forget about ever being late for work.

She's super athletic, which makes her even more capable of pulling these things off, and I'm sure if someone ever decides to bring her awesomeness to the big screen in motion picture form... it will require someone with the ability to keep up just to stay in character. Otherwise, just go CGI and keep it moving. By the way, If you didn't know... there is a 2014 anime film titled, Bayonetta: Bloody Fate.

There was a bit of drama when her new look was revealed for the second installment of the action-packed franchise... but I don't remember the last time I've heard a complaint. Bayonetta's short haircut was decided on by the devs to give her a more "masculine" look... for whatever reason.

I didn't jump in the debates about why she should maintain her old look or embrace the new look. People can get a bit crazy about fictional characters, and I had no time for crazy emails trying to argue down "my" opinion. I did find it interesting though because arguments about her look... went into the weird-er category about why no one attracted to women should be attracted to a female character because it's offensive to women (even if that's how attraction works). This isn't an argument presented by all women, because there are countless women who appreciate their beauty being appreciated... but (yeah) the arguments were getting crazy.

One of the points I found relevant enough to speak on (here), was the one about body types and how the shapes of female characters have an unrealistic form. This can be argued for characters of multiple shapes and sizes, but it usually only takes aim and the ones that some find a bit sexier than others. I can see it being sort of intimidating to some, but I can't say that these are unrealistic body types.

They may be seen as unrealistic among some, but some of us have grown up around people with body types that can be found in some games... sooo I say that to say they're getting representation just like the representation that others also receive. If it's unrealistic to some... should the women with those shapes feel as if they're abnormal? I don't think so, that would be wrong. Before I write a book, I'll move on.

The update to her look shifted the arguments for some... granted the costume was similar (because her hair was short), but some argued that it allowed women to take the power back. Arguments began to contradict themselves and... I wasn't going to touch any of it. The only W won here was the fact that the protagonist didn't die at SEGA... which is why the Platinum Games franchise lived on through Nintendo.

Facts: "Naughty boys that stalk the ladies, never get the girl." - Bayonetta

Anyway, Bayonetta is a flashy hero with her first introduction to the world taking place in the fictional European city of Vigrid, where she awakens from a 500-year sleep with no memory of who she is. She began to get... woke over time realizing that she has a piece of jewelry representing one of two factions from her past, as she sets out to find the other. Both of these treasures are known as the eyes of the world, and she has the left one (which is red). Check out this First 30 of Bayonetta and consider diving into her world on the Nintendo Switch... where you can catch up on where she left off.

Mask Up Mondays: NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 (Playoffs Game 1)

Shout out to the essential workers representing and keeping things going on the frontlines, I even wear masks in the drive-thru or curbside out of respect (so I'm not increasing their risk). There are workers being verbally and physically attacked for wearing masks, and trying to enforce the use of masks in the workplace because customers are required to wear them in the store.

Sometimes the attacks stem from reminders to... mask up, sometimes they're just brought on by the sight of masks or the sign on a door or window. If you're one of those mask protestors, let me start off by saying... that's not cool and this pandemic is bigger than your wants.

You don't have to turn to violence because you don't want to wear a mask (to stop the spread), and it's only going to cause the unwanted thing to occur which are full-on lockdowns. The people defying every suggestion to mask up in buildings or around others outside, keep a safe distance, and sanitize... are the people that keep the spread going strong. That's like fuel in a fire, it only helps the fire spread.

If you don't want lockdowns, stores not allowing customers in or only allowing a few in at a time... while hundreds more are waiting in line, job loss due to businesses going belly up, (dude) just wear the mask. If a fire has nowhere to spread, it burns out.

Wearing masks stops the spread, so imagine COVID-19 if everyone acted accordingly and wore their masks. People are dying, people are losing their jobs, people are being evicted, companies are losing business, essential workers are getting sick, and that only increases the scarcity of everything when you think about it. It doesn't require you to wear it in your car, just wear it in stores and public buildings around others, and when you're in crowded spaces and areas where you will interact with things where the public, in general, will go (i.e. gas stations).

Not sure what type of mask is most effective? Take a look at this lab test from June, where the Florida Atlantic University researchers developed a cough emulator lab configuration to determine what the most effective mask would be. The focus is air droplets and how effective certain masks are, and we have the most effective masks in the test available for you w/ a coupon code to save 15% off. So take a look at the video to verify for yourself, and... let's flatten the curve.

UPPERS... Reviewed!

Before I share my thoughts about this over the top beat 'em up brawler, shout out to XSEED Games for supplying a copy of the game for the purpose of this review. All opinions are my own, that said... let's review!

What do you get when you mix macho anime characters... and women with an obsession for super-powered street fights? Well, you get... UPPERS!

Story: UPPERS is set on the deserted island of Last Resort, a place where the characters roam around... just looking to open a can of whoop a** on someone (mainly if you're a guy). The multi-layered story is packed with violence, betrayal, and redemption in the pursuit of being the best of the best on the island.

What I find interesting is that this "deserted" island is able to sustain the population, have stores, schools, a variety of food, and a society in general (no matter how crazy). I was like "where are the materials coming from and how are they cultivating, refining them... and so forth?", I was going back and forth on that word deserted and eventually shrugged it off. I've seen enough anime in my life to know that some will not make sense to me in some aspects.

The stories are as you would expect them to be... a bit crazy and connected to the desire to be the best fighter. Each storyline is powered by the passion to fight, but... with 13 playable characters delivering different personalities you aren't just getting the same personality crammed into a different skin.

Here are some of the characters:

If Daidoji-senpai looks familiar to you, she can be found in the Senran Kagura games. She's one of those characters the developers can't seem to get enough of... without starring in her own franchise. I wish they would pour some love into making one hell of a franchise covering her "legendary" life.

Fun Factor: The fun factor in this game can vary, which is actually based on if you're a fan of anime more so than beat 'em uppers and vice versa (see what I did there?). I can say that it will also determine whether you like this game overall.

The gameplay is... alright. You kick + punch + block + use specials... and throw as you would with most beat 'em up games on the market... with little gimmicks slid in there as you K.O. one group of baddies before moving on to the next. There is a cool little twist there where you answer the request of women who want you to pull off certain actions... and if you do so, you win their love and some anime-style sexiness.

Luckily it's not just panties being thrown at you based on your performance... you actually benefit from a combination of panties being flashed at you. It's weird... I know, but let's jump into what some of the combinations actually do for you in the game.

As you see, if you're flashed three yellow pinstripe panties via the Panty Slot Combinations... your attack power is increased by 20% for 10 seconds. Three yellow polka-dotted panties get you the same effect, while three orange polka-dotted panties (seen below) restore 10% of your health. Once you start playing, the Panty Slot Combinations add to the fun factor because you don't know what you're going to get as far as the effect goes... and you may need the right combination to pull you from the brink of defeat with much-needed health.

So even if beat em 'ups aren't exactly leading the pack nowadays... you can still get into the game based on what it offers (and make the most of it) or focus on fighting to simply reach the next cutscene. As I said... this would probably grab an anime fan's attention more so than someone looking for a great beat 'em upper. One thing I was able to appreciate (to an extent) was the voice acting and the interactions between the characters... that's what gave me that almost anime-show'sh feel. I played to see what was going to happen next in the story... while also trying to do my best to get the best score.

The fun factor was like a seesaw to me... although it didn't dip low enough to get on my bad side, because the interactions in the story weren't repetitive so you actually get the feeling of progression. I did find myself playing the game in sections rather than spending a large amount of time playing (in-game action isn't continuous like some other beat 'em ups). I basically played, got my dose of anime action (cut scenes) and I bounced. I won't say this is a bad thing... because everyone doesn't have the time to go on and on in a game, you only have... yay amount of time to and get on about your business.

So on that note... this game could also be a good fit for those of you with limited game time.

Replay Value: Replay value is definitely there when you think about the number of playable characters and... the fact that each stage has a rating that you can go back and improve on. If you're a fan of beat 'em up games... you can definitely get more replay value out of this game than some others I've played. You have seven acts in this game, and each act has multiple missions. You also get a survival mode, and a hard level (if normal isn't doing it for ya).

While this is one of those releases the fans have been waiting for (since its PS Vita days)... It would've been great to see more added into the updated version. It wouldn't have been a bad idea to add a bit more technical fighting to the game... and I also would've been open to more depth on Last Resort Island. Yeah you have the story and the beat 'em up gameplay, but they could've given us the ability to explore Last Resort Island... not just keep us locked into a certain area that represents a really interactive menu. Let the people roam and explore, maybe a menu to quickly access missions would work... but some of us wouldn't mind making our way to the area where the mission takes place.

Once you complete the final mission in an act... sometimes you get a side story as well. I don't really mention the supporting character or even the women in this portion, because they don't change the outcome of the acts (though they are part of the driving force behind all the fighting).

Price: Pricewise... $29.99 UPPERS hits the mark perfectly, it doesn't price itself out of the game... and there is enough content to justify the price tag.

Overall, UPPERS is a weird over-the-top beat 'em up with a sexy side... for the anime fanatics out there.
