Gaming Monitor Shipments Up By 116% In 2020 To 18.4M Units; Projected To Grow To 26M In 2021

Gaming hardware orders and shipments set record highs in 2020 as people were forced to stay indoors and find alternative forms of entertainment. An estimated 18.4M units of gaming monitors were shipped in 2020, a more than 116% increase from 2019.

Gaming Monitor Shipment More Than Doubled In 2020 – 18.4M Units

Gaming monitors differ from regular monitors in that they are capable of high-performance and are classified as such if a monitor has a refresh rate of at least 100HZ. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdowns, it forced upon nations, demand for such monitors increased dramatically in 2020.

A total of 18.4M gaming monitors were shipped in 2020 compared to just 8.5M in 2019 – a 116% YoY increase. The momentum built from 2020 is expected to continue into 2021 with gaming monitor shipments projected to grow a further 40.76% and reach 25.9M units shipped.

Popular computer hardware brand MSI experienced the highest growth among leading brands registering a 114% YoY increase in gaming monitor shipments. Asus had the highest YoY growth for monitor shipments (both gaming and non-gaming) among leading brands, buoyed by a 108% YoY increase in gaming monitor shipments. AOC/Philips also recorded triple-digit growth with a 102% YoY growth owing to the strong performance of their curved gaming monitors.

Curved Monitors Also Gaining In Popularity – 24% YoY Growth

Halfway through 2020, forecasts showed that the shipment of curved monitors also increased significantly for the year. It was estimated that 12.9M units of curved monitors were shipped in 2020, a 24% increase from the 10.4M units that were sold in the year prior. A further 11.3M units of curved monitors are projected to be shipped in 2021.

“2020’s pandemic caused a significant spike for the entire gaming industry and gaming monitor brands took full advantage. Monitors as a whole experienced tremendous growth as people’s homes became an extension of their offices during the pandemic while gaming monitors particularly reached new heights. Expect this momentum to carry over the next few years as hybrid work models become a more permanent fixture in the corporate world.” - Rex Pascual

Eyeing the... Samsung C43J89

Multiple monitors... widescreen monitors... I love em' (duh of the day). These are things I enjoy without a shadow of a doubt because they provide the screen space for better productivity. I'm sure many of you agree, especially if you're one of the many out there that need to switch between apps.
Gaming is a plus if you want to increase the monitor size for your pleasure, but... even still these monitors can fall a bit short (for me at least). Multiple monitors give me more productivity and a larger viewing space for gaming... but its divided between bezels. The standard widescreen monitor gets the job done for gaming on a larger screen, but... I still wouldn't go that route for a new monitor (I'll highlight my reasons for this).
Goodbye to Bezel Blindspots
Now if a company sent me a widescreen monitor... I wouldn't just turn it down because it wasn't the specific type that I wanted, heck no, but if I were going take some coins out of my Pikachu coin bank... it's going to be for what I have my eyes set on. What might that be? A curved monitor of course!!! Right now, as far as upgrades go... that's one of the few things I can think of as far as actual upgrades go because it's a step forward in functionality for me.

A curved monitor would be my monitor of choice for productivity and PC gaming. Anything else... I'd just use the telly. A curved monitor gives that widescreen view but... unlike the standard widescreen monitor, the curves allow for a comfortable viewing zone.
Curved for Comfort
Multiple monitor setups can achieve this by turning them towards you based on your position... but its just simpler with a curved monitor without being broken up between separate screens. The list of pluses don't stop there. The pluses of getting one of the more modern curved monitors like the Samsung CJ890... is the ability to utilize a built-in KVM Switch. As seen in the image here... you can connect a notebook, and even a cellphone via the DeX Station (a potential plus to capture on-screen video while streaming or something without the need to open software).
Connect and Collaborate
You can split the screen up the way you want... and it's all accessible from a single keyboard, mouse, monitors, and speakers. I just think that's awesome... because productivity can go up without jumping from system to system.

The Samsung C43J89 is a monitor I've had my eye on since last year sometime and it covers the specs that work for me. Going back to the old Pikachu coin back... I still wouldn't settle until I've compared a number of monitors at this $800 price point (especially if it can result in saving money without losing what matters). This is also a VA panel... but that's not the end of the world. I wouldn't go over $1000, there are plenty of monitors below a grand to appreciate... like the CJ890. This isn't exactly a review but... I have my eye on a variety of tech so stay tuned.

Here are the specs for the Samsung C43J89:

Screen Size 43"
Resolution 3840 x 1200
Display Type VA
Aspect Ratio 32:10
Height Adjustable Stand (it also swivels & tilts)
Wall Mountable... although I'm not a fan of placing mounts on my wall.
Flicker Free
Built-in KVM switch
2 x USB Type-C ports
HDMI
Display Port
Refresh Rate 120Hz
Built-In Stereo Speakers

SDGT Entertainment's 2018 Wishmas List

Its that time of year... and we've received so many different types of suggested wishlists from companies for the holidays. That was nice, we appreciate it... but, hmmm (how can I put this) they weren't exactly things we'd have on our wishlists for the most part.

Humble Monthly Bundle: This is a monthly bundle that you can subscribe to... and literally receive a slew of games every month (as seen in the image above). They range from AAA to Indie and vary by genre. This is on our 2018 Wishmas List because it gets you the hookup on games throughout a year... especially on a budget. Not every gamer has the money to get the latest and greatest game every time it releases... so this is the perfect gift that keeps on giving. Right now you can literally get and/or gift a year of Humble Monthly for $99. Nothing to mail or ship, you get the notifications in your email that your games are available and... you download them whenever you want. They don't expire, they're yours through PC/Steam or DRM-Free.

A portable battery charger: This may seem totally lame but... so is your cell phone going dead when you need it the most, or your Nintendo Switch, tablet, laptop and... you get the idea. It doesn't even have to be one particular charger, just aim high when it comes to the mAh and even consider one that also has a solar feature.

You don't need the most expensive one, but if it works with your budget... consider a portable battery charger a must have. If its just for a cell phone or something similar that doesn't require a lot of oomph... some options are super cheap. Charging laptops may cost a tad more... but its all about what's important for you to power up.

1More Quad Driver Headphones: While I will say that the Over-Ear Triple Driver and Spearhead VR headphones are awesome... the one I recommend for this list, is the quad driver in-ear headphones. The ear tips are comfy and vary in size for a variety of earholes... they're quality headphones that deliver great sound, and they're easy on the eyes. These are the first THX-certified headphones, meaning... what you hear in the studio... is what you hear on the phones. I have thoroughly enjoyed these headphones with music, movies, games, and... ASMR.

Rich by Rick Ross's Shaving Cream & Aftershave Balm: Now... before anyone says anything, I have a little beard. I don't really grow facial hair in mass like some guys, but I'm proud of my little beard. (I'm being laughed at right now.) Regardless of its size, its full for its size and I keep it neat... but one thing I don't want in addition to my... beard, are bumps. Nothing like having irritated skin. I went through a few brands... and I won't say names, some were cool too... but I really like the RbRR ones.

The shaving cream feels great and my razor glides. I don't slather my face with it because I don't want to waste it, but I found that I haven't needed a lot. I was concerned about the aftershave balm... because I really haven't used others based on past experience (not the burn, but the irritation)... but this checks out and checks out well. I have not used the beard oil (Rick Ross uses it and you see how awesome his beard is)... so I can't give you any insight on that, but these two get two thumbs up. So my beard may be small... but it's not surrounded by bumpy irritated skin.

Steam Link: We all agreed that this should be on Wishmas 2018 List because... the app is free or get the device that's super inexpensive and delivers games to your TV, and (Beta on) Android phone or tablet via your PC for a console-like experience. This does NOT mean you should skip out on a console if you have the means and actually want the exclusive games they have to offer, that's totally not what I'm saying. What I am saying is that... here is an option to play some of the same games using a free app and device that's a fraction of the cost + the games are usually a lot lower in price.

You can use a Steam controller, Keyboard & Mouse, Xbox controller, Playstation controller, and even a Nintendo Switch Pro controller. No online fees required to game (internet is needed to get your games, but that's the duh of the day), just use your internet connection and as long as your PC specs are decent... you can save yourself some serious coin and still play both new & used multiplatform and even PC only games on Steam Link. So with that said... Game on!

Curved Monitors: When it comes to the PC... I won't say that the actual PC made our first annual Wishmas List (sorry), but... monitors have. Curved monitors to be more specific. Some of these monitors are better than others... and I know that some of you would rather just get multiple monitors and call it a day. I was on the same path, and... I have multiple monitors but... my preference is changing. Multiple monitors are great, but with that comes more energy consumption... and the borders that divide those monitors when gaming. If I can do everything on one vs 2 or 3... why not?

It would help me save some space on the desk too. This isn't exactly the cheapest monitor option, but among the curved options available... see if one works for you.
