Dear Developers: 9 Ways To Get Into The Game Industry

Getting into the game industry as a beginner can be challenging, but there are several ways to increase your chances of success. Here are nine of the best ways to get started in the game industry:

1. Get involved in game development communities: Joining game development communities such as forums and Discord communities can help you connect with other developers and learn from their experiences.

No one said you had to work for an established company, some Indie devs came into the industry... via their first title.

2. Create a portfolio: Building a portfolio of your own game projects is essential to showcase your skills to potential employers.

This can come by way of your contributions to a project... if it's not a game you developed on your own. Even if you haven't worked on a game yet, you can still showcase your skills via your art, sound effects, voice acting + more!

3. Attend game development events: Attending game development events such as game jams, hackathons, and conferences can help you network with other developers and learn new skills.

If you attend such events, be prepared so you have business cards, notepads, or anything else for networking and gathering new information. If you walk out with nothing more than memories of the event, you just may have wasted your time.

4. Learn the necessary skills: Building games requires a variety of skills such as programming, art, and design. Learning these skills through online courses, tutorials, and books can help you build a strong foundation.

No college required.

5. Participate in game development contests: Participating in game development contests such as game jams and hackathons can help you build your skills and gain exposure.

This is similar to number 3, but... gather any information that will benefit you in the journey. Going and forgetting vital information would... suck... royally.

6. Apply for internships: Interning at a game development studio can provide you with valuable experience and contacts in the industry.

This one could be tricky to even obtain but always remember... Google search is your friend!

7. Build relationships with industry professionals: Building relationships with industry professionals such as game developers, publishers, and journalists can help you learn about the industry and potentially lead to job opportunities.

At times, it's who you know but... it might be easier to meet them in a non-business setting. Building a relationship on the outside could help you get access just as quick or even quicker than being on the inside because if they're around you and know that you're skilled... they'd be more enthusiastic to want to help a friend. Professionally doesn't hurt either, especially if that person lives by the rule of not working or living with friends to avoid ruining their friendship, but... they could give you an alley-oop into another studio.

8. Seek out mentorship: Finding a mentor in the game industry can provide you with guidance and advice on how to succeed in the industry.

The earlier you find a mentor for yourself or your child (15 to 24) the better. The older a person gets, the less people want to help them. Don't miss this boat, there are mentorship programs out there, do a Google search for local mentorship programs in the game industry. Also, check with your local government to see if they have any programs funded by the city that help youth with such a thing.

9. Be persistent: Getting into the game industry can take time and persistence. Keep practicing, building your skills, and pursuing opportunities until you achieve your goals.

Always keep in mind, to protect your ideas. Just like you're looking for opportunities, there are people also looking for new concepts to make money from, and... if your idea isn't protected consider it snagged. It's uncool, but some consider it... business (and don't be surprised if some of those people are a part of bigger studios).

Lastly, while in pursuit of your career, never stop chipping away at an indie project. Just because you don't have a job yet, doesn't mean you can't create one for yourself if your own project hits the mark. You can start this as early as today because game dev projects don't have an age requirement, but I do encourage parents to ensure things are... kosher if your child has a team developing a game with the desire of releasing it on the market.

FTS: Twin Sails to Publish "Survival: Fountain of Youth"

Twin Sails Interactive to Publish Survival: Fountain of Youth, an Age of Exploration Caribbean Survival Adventure

Survival crafting game inspired by historical expedition receives new trailer ahead of spring 2023 early access launch

PARIS  Feb. 21, 2023  Twin Sails Interactive, the publisher of Gloomhaven and Ember Knights, has today announced a partnership with Odinsoft to publish Survival: Fountain of Youththe single-player survival game set in the 16th-century Caribbean islands. The agreement comes alongside a new video highlighting Survival: Fountain of Youth’s upcoming 2023 early access launch.

Dive into an open-world survival crafting experience as a shipwrecked member of Juan Ponce de León’s expedition for the Fountain of Youth. Awaken on the shores of an uninhabited archipelago and get to work securing shelter, food, and water. Stave off hunger, thirst, and dangerous diseases while exploring uncharted environments, scouring for clues to the missing crew’s location, and crafting weapons and tools to establish a base of operations.

Combine a myriad of materials to assemble a wealth of useful items. Start with primitive bows, ideal for small game hunting, and eventually progress to powerful muskets strong enough to fight back against the archipelago’s deadly predators. Lash wood together and build a simple raft capable of exploring nearby landmarks, and work tirelessly to eventually assemble a glorious Spanish schooner to patrol for secrets across the tropical paradise.

Travel to different islands with sea vessels to seek out signs of fellow explorers, but be prepared for unexpected challenges. Assemble supplies before setting out on sea voyages and unlock new regions by either uncovering mapping notes abandoned by previous expeditions, referencing copper plaques hidden in ancient ruins, or crafting more technologically advanced vessels capable of longer trips. Plot a route and set sail on an epic journey full of ancient civilizations to explore, mysterious messages from missing crew members, and the clues tied to the secret of the fabled Fountain of Youth.

Survival: Fountain of Youth’s upcoming early access launch allows the development team to continually update and iterate on the experience through a collaborative process of listening to and implementing community feedback to create an immersive survival crafting game inspired by historical events. The early access version will debut with two expansive regions to explore, full of resources, fauna, and secrets to uncover, with three additional regions planned in subsequent updates, adding new biomes, story quests, and much more.

“Finding a reliable publishing partner was as challenging as finding the Fountain of Youth, and we were thrilled to get in touch with Twin Sails,” said Stas Ignatov, Head of Publishing at Odinsoft. “Their deep analysis of the game, thorough expertise and genuine interest in the project were the key reasons for us to partner with them. Twin Sails is dedicated to helping Odinsoft make Survival: Fountain of Youth one of the top survival games of 2023 and fulfill players’ expectations in the best possible way.”

“We are thrilled to publish Survival: Fountain of Youth, the long-awaited unique blend of survival and historical fantasy,” said Nicolas Godement, Managing Director of Twin Sails. “We are very excited by the game’s expertly crafted mechanics immersing players in a world filled with danger and mystery, supported by a well-written story full of twists and turns. We look forward to working with Odinsoft’s team of adventurers to craft an unforgettable experience.”

Survival: Fountain of Youth will arrive on Windows PC via Steam Early Access in Q2 2023, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions planned alongside the version 1.0 launch. For more information, wishlist Survival: Fountain of Youth on Steam.

Zool Redimensioned... A Classic Is Back As A Door Into The Industry?

If I didn't play Zool 2 on the Atari Jaguar so many years ago (and yes I owned one of those)... I would've passed this one by, but luckily I didn't. Not only is Zool Redimensioned a remake (with the retro version tucked in)... it comes by way of a commendable initiative.

Zool Redimensioned, is a 2D platformer starring a ninja alien from the Nth Dimension (who totally gives me Sonic The Hedgehog vibes) who throws these laser-like shurikens and uses katanas to take on 28 redesigned stages and bosses in the Nth Dimension.

One thing I appreciate (which a number of colleges with so-called game development programs should be doing) is the door being opened into the industry for students behind this game. The industry isn't as open as some may think, and I can understand to a degree when it comes to experience... because you don't want a game release to be a waste of time based on rookie mistakes. On the other hand, how are students expected to get any seasoning when the door is closed to those who lack experience with games that have been officially released?

So that's why I salute those like... Sumo Digital Academy, because routes like this are a sure pathway to get experience under your belt. I don't know if the students get a cut of the sales, but... with that title under their belt, it's a pass that few can say they actually have. We might be looking at future legends of the industry.

Zool Redimensioned has been rebuilt from scratch by the Sumo Digital Academy, a talent development programme focused on creating new pathways into the games industry. With guidance from the developers of the 1992 original at Gremlin Graphics, we’ve retained the spirit that makes Zool a cult classic, while adding mechanics we’ve loved from the past 29 years of fantastic platforming games. The result is Zool Redimensioned, a game that transcends time and space - don’t miss out on this classic retro adventure!

This isn't the only route, but... it's certainly an option that doesn't require a 4-year college. I don't know if SDA does placement or anything of that sort, so if they're on your radar... ask questions. The other options as mentioned before... include taking courses online (which are affordably priced) or getting dev course bundles (that have books, software, and/or courses). Click the links and check them out.

First 30: Somerville

Somerville is a work of art. Off the bat, you're pulled into this beautiful cinematic experience that feels like a polygonal film. I didn't even realize that it was officially time for me to take the reigns when the gameplay initially began.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this game, but once I got into it and began to flow... I was definitely ready for more. It's safe to say that this 1st 30 wasn't my last time playing this game, but... I couldn't just play it to the point that left nothing for you to experience. So... get ready for this "hand-crafted narrative experience". This game is listed under Adventure in regards to genres, but I'd also add puzzle + thriller for you... and the people that watch you play this game.

I highly recommend either listening to this on surround sound or a nice pair of headphones... like the Audeze Mobius... or even the 1More Aero earbuds (based on the spatial sound technology).

Welcome to Somerville, enjoy!

This game is rated for Everyone 10+
