HexGaming Phantom Controller: Hex Hall Effect Edition... Reviewed!

Many thanks to HexGaming for thinking of our audience this holiday season. The team over at HexGaming wanted to share their recent leap forward in precision and performance by way of the Hex Hall Effect Edition of their HexGaming Phantom Controller for the PS5 + PC + Mobile. Let's dive into what makes this version... even better, after this unboxing:

When it comes to gaming controllers, the HexGaming Phantom has made quite a name for itself. Building on the success of its predecessor, the original Phantom, this new iteration introduces groundbreaking Hex Hall Effect technology that takes the precision up a notch.

Design and Comfort

Right out of the box, the HexGaming Phantom impresses with its sleek, ergonomic design that maintain's the beauty of the original Phantom. The button layout wasn't broke, so I appreciate the fact that they didn't try to fix it... but the back buttons are still something I have to get adjusted to using (I'll get back to this later).

Another touch that I can't forget about is the textured grips that ensure that you won’t lose your hold during those nail-biting moments, a feature that was already commended in the original Phantom. Now let's get into what makes this controller different from the original.

Hex Hall Effect Technology: A Game Changer

The most significant upgrade in the HexGaming Phantom is undoubtedly the Hex Hall Effect technology. This innovative feature utilizes magnetic sensors instead of traditional potentiometers, and the benefits are immediately noticeable:

  • Unmatched Durability: While the original Phantom was built to last, the Hall Effect sensors take durability to the next level. Say goodbye to the wear and tear that often plagues standard controllers; this technology is designed to withstand the rigors of intense gaming.
  • Enhanced Precision: The magnetic sensors provide a level of responsiveness that's undeniable, resulting in a controller with kickass precision... so you’ll experience smoother movements and more accurate inputs, which is crucial for competitive play. Every flick of the thumbstick translates into the game with greater speed, giving you the edge you desire.
  • Custom Sensitivity: One of the standout features of the Phantom is the ability to adjust thumbstick sensitivity. Whether you’re sniping from a distance or racing at breakneck speeds, you can tailor the controller to fit your playstyle perfectly. This level of customization was a nice touch in the first Phantom, but the Hall Effect technology elevates it to new height.

Performance That Delivers

In terms of performance, the HexGaming Phantom continues to shine. The buttons and triggers are responsive, providing satisfying feedback that enhances the gaming experience. The adjustable trigger stops allow for quicker response times, making it easier to pull off those critical in-game maneuvers.

Going back to those... back buttons: The Triangle, Square, X and O buttons that require me to move my right thumb off the... joystick to press them are certainly motivating me put the back buttons to use more often. Shifting those buttons to the back and using my middle fingers for K1, K2, K3, and K4... would eliminate (at least I believe) my need to take my thumb off the right joystick. It's not a biggie, but switching over being able to use those buttons while still aiming at the same time... is a game changer compared to not having the option of those back buttons.

Speaking of joysticks, you get four types for your gaming pleasure. In addition to them all featuring a nice textured grip, you get two regular concave options as well as two concave options that provide extended length + width. You also get a domed regular, two domed extended length, and... a regular length concave thumbstick featuring an extended width surface. Once you place the rubber protector rings on, just snap them onto the controller and dive into the action. Competition wise, if you need to adapt to a situation, you can swap these thumbsticks out at the snap of a finger and get ready for the next match.

Those with their sights truly set on an eSports competition will appreciate the customization options available with the new HexGaming Phantom even more than those of us who love the quality, because... victory equals money!

In terms of competing in multiple genre's, you don't have to worry about reprogramming the buttons either. As seen in the original Phantom, the new version also gives you 6 different (color coded) profiles that you can use for shooters, fighting, racing, etc.

Also, I have to include this: Like in the original Phantom controller review, when it comes to the customization of the controls... the back buttons open the door to those who may have special needs. If you don't have the ability to use the trigger buttons on either side, but... you have access to the back buttons, you can adapt to the situation. So consider this an additional option for everyday or competitive play. Gameplay using the adaptive & digital triggers:

By the way, I totally geeked out over the fact that the triggers gave me haptic feedback me in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. This was a badass surprise. You will get this feedback with the adaptive trigger activated, which is also great for racing games too thanks to the detailed acceleration control. On the flipside, if you want to be quicker on the draw in FPS games, switch over to the digital trigger that only requires a 1.5mm trigger pull to set it off.

When it comes to Drifix, you don't have to worry about using your little screwdriver anymore to correct joystick deviations. HexGaming created a device that allows you to calibrate accordingly and eliminate drift to restore full control as see in the video below:

Pricewise + In the box:

The HexGaming Phantom Controller Bundle is $259, which includes:

USB-C Cable (by the way, this is a really long cable. Possibly 7+ feet.) Carrying Case Thumbstick Case

This bundle is only $30 more than the controller, which makes this the better deal in my opinion. I'll wrap this up with comparisons to PS5's DualSense Edge controller. It's $30 bucks more than the first party controller, but... here are the pluses:

  • It has 2 more remappable back buttons for a total of 4
  • 6 Switchable Controller Profiles
  • Digital Triggers
  • Built-in Drifix Modules vs Replaceable Analog Stick Modules
  • Hex Hall Effect Joysticks
  • 8 Interchangeable Thumsticks vs 6 with DualSense Edge
  • Premium Performance Grips
  • Weight is 295g vs 325g

Certain gamers looking at pro controllers may want to consider this option in terms of accuracy and the ability to customize even more so than Playstation's DualSense Edge, but when it comes to eSports players... the investment is worth considering to take your game to a whole new level (for the win).

HexGaming Phantom Controller... Reviewed!

Thank you for checking out this review of the Hexgaming Phantom Controller for PS5 and PC. Before I jump in, I want to give a shout out to Hexgaming for supplying us with a controller for the sake of reviewing it... for you. My opinions are my own.

Before I get into the specifics... let's unbox this thing!

Before I was able to do anything, I had to figure out which thumbsticks I was going to use first, so I went with the standard... concave regular thumbsticks just to see what the experience was like when compared to similar thumbsticks of alternate controllers. My focus is the quality and what makes this controller worth the money for... Playstation DualSense Controller users looking for an upgrade, PC Gamers in the market for a new game controller, eSports players, and break dancing puppies with at least a 2.5 GPA (who love Parappa the Rapper). So with the thumbsticks connected... let's play!

If you haven't picked up a Playstation controller in awhile, then you... (like me) will have to figure out how to sync the controller to your PC if it's your target platform. You may think it's as simple as turning on the controller, but you will have to press the power button + the share button (the 'Select' button on the left) to enter into pairing mode. It won't require much to sync it from that point, just go to Start (in Windows OS) > Bluetooth and other devices settings > (when the pop up box appears... click) Add Bluetooth or other device > (click on) DualSense Wireless Controller. I'm listing this, because it's not on the website from what I see (I would present such an option to better help people connect to their devices without the need to go elsewhere). By the way, the same steps will also help you connect to the PS5(... duh of the day), phones, and tablets.

If you didn't hear everything in the video, I complimented the grip of the controller. You get a nice thorough feel. It's not a gummy grip, its a nice quality textured grip for the handles + you get a nice grip from the thumb sticks that's available on both the rounded and concave options. You can feel the quality. If you aren't familiar with the weight of a controller like this (based on the extra tech on deck), you will notice it, but... it's nothing that decreased my game time (tolerance wise). I've easily sank in 6 hours of game time with this controller, but I also bounced between the standard Xbox & Luna controllers. It wasn't fair to compare, and I won't as far as details go, but... it's a night and day difference as far as features go (for the most part).

It still took some getting adjusted too, but... the long thumbstick (at least for the right analog stick) is something I never realized I would benefit from until given the option. I suspected that it would allow me to improve my aim and so forth (at least with some games), but my assumption was correct... for FPS games.

Can I get by with the standard controller... absolutely, but this controller has options that you will only find in an eSports ready controller (especially if you need such a thing).

You get 8 swappable thumbsticks... which help you refine your feel based on your needs (some domed, wide, rounded, standard, long) and all options have nice grip. So based on your needs, you're good to go.

The 4 extra buttons on back (as mentioned in the video), allow you to add certain moves that you wouldn't normally utilize with that type of placement. You don't need them, but they're good to have if you want to use the for taking cover or whatever the case may be... and you're not limited to one layout. Double tap the button you see below and the options change based on the game you're playing and how you set it up. There are other options where the back buttons run across... but reaching past another button to hit one that's further away isn't as easy as the set up you see in this Hex Phantom controller. Your middle finger is in easy reach of these buttons.

There is one thing that also crossed my mind when it comes to the placement of these buttons, what if someone has a physical challenge preventing them from using other buttons (i.e. L1, R1)? This could increase the abilities some gamers have in terms of enjoying themselves and even taking on the competition in esports because all they have to do is assign the buttons to the back. These do not fully replace an adaptive trigger... so don't get it twisted when it comes to that, but it could make playing more games possible.

By the way, you're able to turn L2 & R2 into digital triggers with the flip of a switch... along with adjusting the trigger pull. This is serious customization, it's not just an a or b switch... you're able to tweak to adapt. I still have to fully setup the controller in a way that suits me. You have to test and test and test... and it's awesome that the controller is able to do such.

Speaking of which... eSports players will love the stick drift fix. You literally just go in and adjust your thumbsticks on the website. You will simply go to the testing page and correct it... in real time (or test to see if it's centered). This allows for accuracy, and less frustration when taking on the competition. Also, money doesn't grow on trees... this manual adjustment is a great way to keep cash in your pocket after such an investment. Speaking of investments, if you're spending money on a pro controller like the Hex Phantom... either get the kickstarter bundle with the case or get a case from the HexGaming store. They also have the USB cables and more thumbsticks.

Weight wise it is heavier than the standard DualSense by 17g. The standard is 278g, and the Phantom is 295g... which is something to take into account. There is a big but though, because the PS5 DualSense Edge is 325g in weight. On that note, let's jump into some more comparisons.

Standard PS5 DualSense

  • Weight 278g

Gigantic is back... via the Rampage Edition, but let me say this first!

I thoroughly enjoyed Gigantic for the most part back in it's free-to-play days, and could totally understand why it was an award winning MOBA. It sealed the deal for "Best MOBA" back at GAMESCOM 2016! What made it even better is that it didn't require a lot of oomph from your PC to enjoy, and I even found myself playing it on a laptop with decent specs after a certain shipping company lost my gaming laptop and it had to be replaced (long story). Anyway, it doesn't hurt for it to be back in paid form... but I do have my reservations.

A number of you can pull up Gigantic right now (if you owned the game) and see that there's a notice tucked in there that reads: At the request of the publisher, Gigantic is unlisted on the Steam store and will not appear in search.

What's stopping that from happening with the paid version? I get that there was a developer and publisher swap from Motiga Inc. & Perfect World Entertainment... to Abstraction Games & Gearbox Publishing, but will the old door be accessible to previous players who dropped coin to support it initially or will we be expected to enter the game through a new paygate with fingers crossed that it will remain up and running this time around? I get it, new ownership... but the paranoia's real folks.

To potentially answer my own question (to a certan degree) with an answer from Gearbox:

Gigantic: Rampage Edition is developed by Abstraction Games, keeping the core of what made Gigantic special, while adding exciting new features. - Gigantic FAQ

This likely means that the build recycled a number of assets we're familiar with and possibly polished them up through a new engine of sorts... without the need to fully program everything (since the source code was already there). So it may look the same, but it may be a better looking clone. Plus the system requirements have been bumped up... which certainly indicates a change. I remain optimistic until launch because of what's listed in the original's system requirements.

 Previous System Requirements

MINIMUM:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

OS *: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 (64-bit)

DirectX: Version 11

Network: Broadband Internet connection

Storage: 10 GB available space

Additional Notes: 6 GB RAM requirement refers to usable memory only

RECOMMENDED:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

* Starting January 1st, 2024, the Steam Client will only support Windows 10 and later versions. Why would this be listed if previous owners no longer have access? Are we back on?! Stay tuned!

 Current System Requirements

MINIMUM:

OS: Windows 10 x64

Processor: Intel Core i3-4160 (2 * 3600) or equivalent/AMD Athlon X4 860K (4 * 3700) or equivalent

Memory: 8 GB RAM

Graphics: GeForce GT 640 (2048 MB)/Radeon HD 7750 (1024 MB)

Storage: 15 GB available space

RECOMMENDED:

OS: Windows 10 x64

Processor: Intel Core i7-10700 (8 * 2900) or equivalent/AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (8 * 3700) or equivalent

Graphics: GeForce RTX 2070 Super (8192 MB)/Radeon RX 5700 XT (8192 MB)

I'm happy to see that it's back, and the least they can do with the hero shooter is allow gamers to take it under our wing if Gearbox ever gets the urge to walk away. Anyway, this crossplatform 5v5 MOBA... drops April 9th (2024) for $19.99, snag it for 20% Off while the get'ns good! You might find me representing out there with Grandma Griselma.

By the way, someone asked why we promote the Purple seat cushion so much. The reason being is that there are a number of adult gamers and some underage gamers dealing with back issues. There are gamers who would love to game on PC, but... it's literally a pain for them to sit in a PC chair compared to their couch. It could be pain from a car accident, a workplace injury, or something else that occurred off the clock. While we do recommend getting up to stretch and even partiking in exercise... this helps. The Cushion Designed for Gaming!
