Flipping is Hard Turns an Old-School Phone Into Your Next Test of Patience

Remember those old brick phones that looked like they could survive falling down a flight of stairs? Flipping is Hard gives one a starring role—and makes getting back upstairs your problem. Available on PC through Steam, this physics-based climbing game from Elegant Horse Studios puts you in control of Flippy, a phone trying to reunite with his owner. With solo play, online co-op, and optional checkpoints, you can choose how to approach the climb. The phone might survive the journey. Your patience has not been promised the same protection.

One Banana Peel. A Very Bad Day.

Flippy's trouble starts when his owner, Jeff, slips on a banana peel and sends him into a storm drain. That leaves our unfortunate phone in the Trashlands, a towering collection of discarded things with a long route home.

There are no legs to carry you out. Movement revolves around rotation and a vibration jump as you work through 10 areas. A poorly judged move can cost you altitude, making each landing part of the challenge.

That's the hook that gets my attention. You don't need a lengthy explanation to understand the stakes: there's where you want to go, there's the drop beneath you, and there's your confidence volunteering you for a jump it cannot personally guarantee.

Online Co-op: Bring Friends. Remember Who Laughed.

You can climb alone or play in online co-op, with proximity chat giving everyone an opportunity to hear how well you're handling adversity. Helping other players is also part of the setup, including a Help Beam that can pull a fallen friend toward you.

That sounds like fertile ground for the friend who says, “Relax, I've got you,” immediately before making the situation worse. For me, the appeal of this kind of multiplayer is the shared story afterward: who made the save, who panicked, and who suddenly became very quiet after giving everyone instructions.

 Chill Mode Adds Optional Checkpoints

The optional Chill Mode enables checkpoints. That's a welcome inclusion for players interested in the journey without wanting every mistake to become a lengthy return trip.

I like having that choice. Sometimes you want to conquer a difficult game on its harshest terms. Sometimes you've already worked a full shift, and a fictional phone does not need to become your second job.

Beyond climbing, there are character challenges, cosmetic customization, and unlockable retro mobile games. Speedrun features include quick restarts and built-in splits for players who want to turn an awkward ascent into a practiced route.

Flipping Really is Hard, where is Simone Biles?

Flipping is Hard has a premise that makes its pitch immediately. An old phone, a difficult climb, and plenty of room for spectacular mistakes.

"Can we get a Simone Biles gymnast outfit to help us stick the landings in chill mode? I'm kidding. Kinda... because when you go from being close to a star to a slip that lands you back at square one (OMG), you might get the urge to yell. I did (...yell that is)!" -  Blu

The nostalgic lead gives it personality before you've even considered how many attempts reaching the top might require.

Whether the movement remains satisfying through repeated falls is something a hands-on review would need to establish. On concept alone, though, this belongs on the radar of players who enjoy mastering unusual controls—and groups who can laugh when a rescue attempt needs its own rescue attempt.

PC Release Date and Steam Price

Flipping is Hard launched on October 16, 2026, published by Elegant Horse Studios and Dawn Wood Games. As checked on October 24, Steam lists a U.S. price of $9.74 at 35% off the regular $14.99, with the introductory offer scheduled to end October 30. Regional pricing may differ.

Flipping Is Hard Launches October 16 with Up to 16-Player Co-op

Flipping Is Hard

VILNIUS, Lithuania – October 9, 2026 – Elegant Horse Studios has announced that Flipping Is Hard, its physics-based co-op rage platformer, launches October 16, 2026 on PC via Steam for $14.99. The studio says more than 100,000 players tried the demo, and the full game is now one week away.

A Brick Phone with a Long Way Up

You are Flippy, a Flippia brick phone thrown into the trash. Your irresponsible owner Jeff is stranded atop the Trashlands, a bizarre mountain of forgotten toys, gadgets and childhood memories. Unable to walk, Flippy must flip end-over-end through 10 increasingly perilous levels, from storm drains and candy hills to neon grids and refrigerators.

The climb introduces strange residents, including a foul-mouthed Tamagotchi, an anarchist gummy bear, a rave-DJ gingerbread man and a scrapped-game alien. A friendly Narrator guides the journey, but the higher you climb, the more the Trashlands begin to resemble a carefully designed trap.

Chill, Hard or Chaotic Co-op

  • Two difficulty options: Flipping Is Chill targets around five hours, while Flipping Is Hard targets eight or more. Actual playtime depends on platforming skill.
  • Solo play: Take on the full climb with every success and failure resting on your own timing.
  • Up to 16 players online: Climb together with proximity voice chat, the Help Beam, teleporting Microwaves and Pings.
  • Extras along the way: Collect coins, achievements, challenges and phone skins, and play retro mini-games such as Fnake, Floppy Road and Flippy Bird.

The same climb becomes a shared social challenge in co-op, where players can recover together—or send a plan sideways through bad timing. The game has a proper ending, although reaching it may take a few more attempts than expected.
