Atari and Universal Have a 10-Movie Deal lineup... But Where Is Yars Rising?

When I heard that Atari and Universal Pictures struck a deal to develop up to 10 movies inspired by classic Atari properties, my first thought wasn't excitement—it was curiosity.

Then excitement kicked in because of that curiosity.

The thought of Atari going hard on the big screen is genuinely cool. These are games that helped shape the video game industry, and after decades of seeing gaming become one of the biggest entertainment industries in the world, it's nice to see one of its pioneers getting another moment in the spotlight.

The films are being developed through Universal Pictures and Entertainment 360, with the goal of creating original, large-scale adventures inspired by these classic Atari properties rather than simply recreating the original games.

I honestly can't wait to see what they come up with.

But... I'd have one request.

Please don't overlook Yars Rising.

Now I'm not saying Universal should replace Yars' Revenge with Yars Rising. If Yars Rising isn't part of this particular deal, that's perfectly fine.

What I am saying is that someone—whether it's Universal, another studio, or even an animation company—should seriously consider bringing Yars Rising to the big screen someday. The game already has everything a movie needs in my opinion.

 Keep It 100...

Many of Atari's earliest games were created during a time when storytelling simply wasn't the priority.

They were built around arcade gameplay, chasing high scores, and letting your imagination fill in the blanks. That's part of what made those classics so special, but what did we have before that?

Video games were still finding their footing to become the stepping stones that got us here.

Developers were working with hardware that had tiny amounts of memory, limited storage, and graphics capabilities that today's smartphones could outmuscle without breaking a sweat. Those technical limitations meant gameplay came first, while storytelling often had to take a back seat.

That's not criticism, it's just a part of history. Those games helped build the industry.

Fast forward to today, and Atari's modern releases have access to hardware capable of delivering cinematic cutscenes, voice acting, memorable characters, rich environments, and stories that can unfold over dozens of hours. That's evolution.

And... that's one reason why Yars Rising caught my attention.

Some Titles Just Sound Better Than Others

I'm going to keep it real.

Outside of Yars' Revenge, some of those original Atari game titles still give off "$0.99 movie rack" vibes. Not because the games themselves weren't important (far from it).

But if someone who's never played video games hears titles like Adventure, Breakout, or Pong, those names alone don't immediately scream, "I need to buy a ticket opening weekend."

Fortunately, movie titles can always evolve.

Hollywood changes titles, adds subtitles, and rebrands stories all the time.

The important part is creating a film people genuinely want to watch.

According to Deadline, the lineup includes:

  • Asteroids
  • Adventure
  • Berzerk
  • Breakout
  • Centipede
  • Crystal Castles
  • Millipede
  • Missile Command
  • Pong
  • Yars' Revenge

Yars Rising... is a prime example!

This is where I think Atari already has something special.

In Yars Rising, players take control of Emi Kimura, a young hacker hired by a mysterious client to infiltrate the shadowy QoTech Corporation.

What begins as a covert hacking mission slowly unravels into a much larger science-fiction mystery involving corporate conspiracies, alien connections, powerful new abilities, and a colorful team of hacker allies that make the entire adventure feel alive.

That's not just a game premise... that's the setup for a movie. Emi already has personality, her friends have personality and the dialogue is entertaining.

The mystery hooks you as the story unfolds and the world continues expanding. By the time the credits roll, it's easy to imagine the story continuing beyond the game and clear into a sequel. Even the way she hacks, could be presented in a similar way to the game... but there could be an AI sidekick or something to take on the systems security.

Whether it would become a live-action film or an animated feature, Yars Rising already feels like it was designed with storytelling in mind.

Hollywood spends millions of dollars developing original science-fiction ideas every year.

Atari already has one... sitting inside a modern video game developed by WayForward.

Nostalgia Is Great... But So Is Evolution!

I completely understand why Universal is beginning with Atari's classic catalog.

Those games helped define an era, and I'm genuinely interested to see what the filmmakers create with them. At the same time, Atari has been trying to evolve.

Under CEO Wade Rosen, the company has embraced modern reimaginings and brand-new experiences alongside its legendary classics. Games like Lunar Lander Beyond, Missile Command Delta, Adventure of Samsara, and especially Yars Rising show that Atari isn't just preserving its legacy—it's continuing to build on it. These titles sound more like they're big screen ready (with a tweak to Adventure of Samsara's title).

It's all good though, press forward! Because it could mean that a great Atari movie might come from a modern release one of these days.

Whether Yars Rising ever becomes part of Universal's plans or finds its way to another studio entirely, I genuinely hope it gets its chance also.

Some games are remembered because they changed history.

Others deserve to be remembered because they're ready for the next chapter. For me, Yars Rising feels like one of those games.

And if it ever makes its way to the big screen... I'm down to check it out.

Eyeing the... Tech: Motorola Moto Pad

A capable Android tablet built for entertainment, productivity, and everything in between.

I'm always fascinated by the tech that quietly shows up without making a ton of noise. Not every device needs a huge launch event or a celebrity commercial to be worth paying attention to. Sometimes the products that surprise you the most are the ones simply trying to do their job really well.

That's exactly how I felt when I started looking into Motorola's Moto Pad.

I'll admit it—I enjoy finding technology that makes everyday life a little easier. Whether it's catching up on a few episodes of a favorite show after work, reading through research for my certification, video chatting with family, or winding down with a game before bed, having the right tablet can make those moments a little more enjoyable.

Motorola isn't trying to reinvent what an Android tablet should be here. Instead, the Moto Pad focuses on offering a large display, dependable hardware, modern software, and a price that's much easier on your wallet than many premium tablets. Honestly, I appreciate that approach. Sometimes "good enough" is exactly what people are looking for, especially when "good enough" still comes with features that make daily use enjoyable.

So, is the Moto Pad worth adding to your shortlist? Let's take a closer look.

 Specifications

The Motorola Moto Pad is designed for users who want a capable Android tablet without spending flagship-level money. While it doesn't try to compete with premium productivity tablets costing several hundred dollars more, it offers a balanced experience that covers streaming, web browsing, light productivity, gaming, and reading.

Display: 11-inch 2.5K LCD display (2560 × 1600)

Refresh Rate: 90Hz

Processor: MediaTek Helio G100

Memory: 8GB RAM

Storage: 128GB

Expandable Storage: microSD support

Operating System: Android 15

Rear Camera: 13MP

Front Camera: 8MP

Battery: 7,040mAh

Charging: 20W USB-C fast charging

Audio: Quad speakers with Dolby Atmos

Accessories: Compatible with stylus and keyboard accessories (sold separately)

On paper, that's a solid collection of features for a tablet that's aimed squarely at everyday users.

 Designed for More Than Entertainment

Let's be honest—most tablets spend their lives doing a little bit of everything.

One minute you're watching YouTube, the next you're answering emails, then you're looking up a recipe, reading a book, or helping someone in the family troubleshoot their latest app problem. That's why I like evaluating products based on how people actually use them instead of imagining everyone is editing videos or creating digital artwork.

The Moto Pad seems built around that philosophy.

The 11-inch display gives you plenty of room for multitasking without making the tablet feel oversized, while the 90Hz refresh rate helps everything from scrolling through websites to navigating Android feel noticeably smoother.

If you're someone who enjoys reading articles, browsing social media, or streaming movies after a long day, the larger display is definitely one of the highlights here.

 Performance

Powered by the MediaTek Helio G100 processor and paired with 8GB of RAM, the Moto Pad is built for everyday performance rather than pushing graphical limits.

Apps should launch smoothly, multitasking should remain responsive, and casual games are expected to run comfortably. More demanding games can still be enjoyed, though you'll likely want to adjust graphics settings for the best experience.

Personally, I appreciate when a company understands who a product is for. Not every tablet needs desktop-level performance if it already handles the tasks most people use every day.

 Audio and Entertainment

One feature that immediately caught my attention is the inclusion of four speakers with Dolby Atmos support.

If you're someone who enjoys watching Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, or listening to music while cooking dinner or relaxing around the house, better speakers make a bigger difference than many people realize.

Instead of reaching for headphones every time, having fuller, louder sound built directly into the tablet makes the overall experience much more enjoyable.

Sometimes the little quality-of-life improvements end up being the ones you appreciate the most.

 Battery Life

Battery anxiety is something most of us have experienced at one point or another.

Whether you're traveling, sitting through a long flight, or simply forgetting where you left your charger, having confidence that your tablet can keep going is always a nice feeling.

The Moto Pad includes a 7,040mAh battery designed to support a full day of mixed usage. Depending on what you're doing, whether that's streaming, browsing, reading, or taking notes, most users should comfortably make it through their day before needing to recharge.

 Who Is It For?

The Moto Pad makes the most sense for people looking for an affordable Android tablet without sacrificing the features that matter most.

It could be a great option if you:

  • Enjoy streaming movies and television shows.

  • Want a larger screen for reading or web browsing.

  • Need a tablet for school or light office work.

  • Like having expandable storage through microSD.

  • Prefer Android's flexibility over other mobile operating systems.

If you're looking for professional creative software, desktop-class performance, or advanced multitasking comparable to premium flagship tablets, you may want to explore higher-end options. However, for everyday users, the Moto Pad appears well-positioned to deliver solid value.

 Community Impressions

Early conversations surrounding the Moto Pad have been encouraging.

Many people seem to appreciate Motorola's decision to focus on affordability while still including features like a 2.5K display, Dolby Atmos speakers, expandable storage, and Android 15.

Some buyers have naturally compared it with Lenovo and Samsung's mid-range Android tablets, especially since Motorola and Lenovo share ownership. Others are curious to see how long Motorola plans to support the device with software updates.

At this point, most of the discussion revolves around value. People aren't expecting the Moto Pad to replace premium productivity tablets—they're hoping it delivers a dependable everyday experience at a competitive price.

 Things to Consider Before Buying

Before deciding on any tablet, it's worth thinking about how you'll actually use it.

If you're primarily watching videos, reading, browsing the web, attending online classes, or occasionally playing games, the Moto Pad checks a lot of important boxes.

If you rely heavily on professional creative applications, advanced multitasking, or high-end gaming, you may benefit from investing in hardware designed specifically for those workloads.

Choosing the right tablet isn't about buying the most expensive one—it's about finding the one that fits your routine.

 Price

One of the first things I look at when a new piece of tech catches my attention is whether it feels like you're getting good value for your money. After all, a product can have an impressive list of features, but if the price doesn't make sense, it's much harder to recommend.

The Motorola Moto Pad carries a suggested retail price of $249.99 USD, positioning it as an affordable Android tablet for students, families, casual users, and anyone looking for a dependable device without stepping into premium tablet pricing.

For that price, Motorola includes an 11-inch 2.5K display with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, expandable microSD support, quad speakers enhanced with Dolby Atmos, and a sizable battery designed to keep up with everyday activities. When you compare that feature set to many tablets in the same price range, the Moto Pad begins to stand out as a strong value proposition.

What I appreciate most is that Motorola doesn't appear to be asking buyers to compromise on the essentials. You're still getting a modern Android experience, a vibrant display for streaming and reading, and enough performance for multitasking, all while keeping the price comfortably below many flagship tablets.

As always, it's worth watching for retailer promotions, seasonal sales, and bundle offers. A $249.99 tablet can become an even more attractive purchase if it's paired with discounts on accessories like a stylus, keyboard case, or protective cover.

For anyone shopping with a budget in mind, the Moto Pad strikes me as the kind of device that's priced to be accessible without feeling stripped down, and that's something I always like to see.

 Return Trends

Since the Moto Pad is still relatively new in the market, there isn't enough long-term consumer data to identify any meaningful return trends.

As more people spend time with the device, we'll have a clearer understanding of long-term reliability, battery performance, software stability, and overall customer satisfaction. For now, there are no widespread reports suggesting unusual return rates.

 My Take Away

One thing I've learned over the years is that technology doesn't have to be flashy to be useful.

The Moto Pad isn't trying to compete with every premium tablet on the market, and honestly, I don't think it needs to. Instead, it focuses on delivering the features most people use every single day: a sharp display, dependable performance, expandable storage, immersive speakers, and battery life that should comfortably support everyday routines.

If your goal is finding an Android tablet that offers a nice balance between performance and affordability, the Motorola Moto Pad is certainly one worth exploring. It may not be the loudest name in the tablet space, but sometimes the products that quietly do their job well end up being the ones people appreciate the most.
