John Dolmayan's 'Dead Samurai' Issue 1... Mini Review!

What do you get when you combine System of a Down's Drummer, John Dolmayan with his love for comic books? You get, 'Dead Samurai', featuring cover art by Bill Sienkiewicz (Elektra: Assassin, New Mutants, and Moon Knight), illustrated by Ryan Benjamin (Star Wars, Iron Man, Batman, Wonder Woman)!

John Dolmayan's 'Dead Samurai' Issue 1 is a promising start to the series, set in 16th century feudal Japan. The story follows Shinzo, a loyal Samurai serving Lord Kawamaki, who faces an unexpected challenge in the form of flesh-eating zombies! The narrative takes a surprising turn to some extent, giving Shinzo a new purpose and introducing characters like an unidentified monk and Akii, Lord Kawamaki's daughter.

The comic art is commendable, which makes me wonder how it will look in full color since we received it prior to the official release. The story, cover art, and pacing are executed well, earning the comic a rating of 5 out of 5 cool points in my book. Priced at $5.99, the comic offers good value, and I have no doubt the full colored release will be welcomed by general comic book lovers and new fans.

Overall, 'Dead Samurai' Issue 1 is a solid entry that leaves me eager for more. It's not just a blood bath, and I hope they flesh out more of the substance in the issues to come. I don't know if Shinzo has to face the dead samurai on the cover or if he will become the dead samurai on the cover. I guess we'll find out later.
