Tech This Out: Grow Your Own Groceries? The NEEWER Basics Hydroponics Growing System Makes It Easier Than You Think

There are some products you buy because they're fun. There are others you buy because they might actually make a difference one day.

The NEEWER Basics Hydroponics Growing System Kit with LED Plant Light falls squarely into that second category.

Now, before anyone says, "Blu, since when did you become a gardener?"... let me stop you right there.

I've had a green thumb for years. Gardening has been something my daughter and I have enjoyed together since she was about three or four years old. We've spent plenty of days outside pulling weeds, laying fresh soil, planting seeds, watering our garden, and celebrating every little sprout that broke through the ground. Before that, I can say there was always a little Planeteer sitting on my shoulder since I was a kid.

Over the years we've grown everything from strawberries, green peppers, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes to pineapples and even bananas (although those came from a small tree we planted years ago; shout out to Brittany the Banana Tree). There's something incredibly rewarding about watching food go from a tiny seed to something you can harvest and bring into the kitchen.

That's one of the reasons this hydroponic system immediately caught my attention. It doesn't replace traditional gardening—in my opinion, nothing really does—but it opens the door for people who don't have a backyard, have limited space, or simply want to grow fresh herbs, fruits, and vegetables right on the kitchen counter.

I've actually wanted to write this article for quite some time because I genuinely believe more people should have some way to grow food at home. What reminded me recently was a social media post discussing seedless produce. While seedless fruits and vegetables are convenient, they also mean you can't simply save seeds from those items to plant later.

I replied to that post with a simple message:

"Get seeds for a rainy day."

To my surprise, the comment grabbed quite a bit of attention—not because it brought attention to SDGT Entertainment, but because people actually stopped to think about how valuable they are.

That was encouraging. Here at SDGT Entertainment, we're proudly pro-garden.

Whether it's a backyard, raised bed, balcony planter, or a hydroponic system sitting on your kitchen counter, we encourage everyone to start growing something today. Having access to a food source is valuable, and you never know when you'll appreciate having one close by because you need it.

Products like this exist to make growing your own food much less intimidating.

What Exactly Is the NEEWER Basics Hydroponics Growing System?

If you've never heard of hydroponics, don't worry—you're not alone.

Hydroponics is simply a method of growing plants without soil. Instead, plants receive water, oxygen, and nutrients directly through their roots, allowing them to grow in a controlled environment.

That doesn't mean every plant belongs in a hydroponic system—but many certainly do.

Hydroponic systems are especially well suited for:

  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Basil
  • Cilantro
  • Parsley
  • Mint
  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Strawberries
  • Cucumbers (including many compact and mini varieties)

Larger plants or those that eventually become trees require much more space and aren't ideal candidates for a countertop hydroponic unit.

The NEEWER Basics HGS01 takes much of the guesswork out of the process by combining:

  • A full-spectrum LED grow light
  • Water circulation
  • Adjustable lighting modes
  • A built-in timer
  • A quiet water pump
  • Space for up to 12 plants

It's designed to help you grow many herbs, leafy greens, and certain fruits and vegetables indoors throughout the year. NEEWER states the system can support growth up to 52% faster than traditional soil planting under the right conditions (they weren't lying). I got sprouts within the first 2 days!

 Wait... NEEWER Makes This? Yep!

This honestly caught me off guard.

When I hear NEEWER, I immediately think of studio lights, camera gear, and content creation equipment.

In fact... I've got several of their lighting products sitting in the office right now.

So when I discovered they were making hydroponic growing systems, I had to check it out. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. They've spent years building lighting products, and now they're using that expertise to help people grow food indoors. Love it!

At around $39.99, it's also surprisingly affordable for someone curious about hydroponic gardening.

The 3.8L Water Reservoir Is a Bigger Deal Than You Think

One thing I immediately appreciated was the 3.8-liter water tank.

You aren't constantly running back and forth every other day filling it with water.

That larger reservoir gives your plants a dependable water supply while reducing how often you'll need to refill the system, though you'll still want to monitor water levels and nutrient concentrations regularly for healthy growth.

The water goes into an easy fill area, but I recommend getting a little spout to pour water in or... a pitcher with a narrow spout so that it doesn't spill. If the water is cold or hot, let it sit until it's room temperature.

  • Cold water holds more oxygen, but very cold water (below 60 degrees Fahrenheit) slows down plant growth and nutrient uptake.

  • Warmer water (above 75 degrees Fahrenheit) loses vital oxygen and helps root rot and harmful fungi grow.

Surprisingly Quiet

One question I had before using it was:

"Is this thing going to hum all night?"

Thankfully... it's not loud. The built-in circulation pump is whisper quiet. Even when the house is completely silent at night, it blends into the background so well that you'll likely forget it's running. That lines up with NEEWER's design, which emphasizes low-noise operation for everyday indoor use. They say "No sound", and without being critical... I can agree. The average person won't have their ear that close to the system.

Watching Your Food Grow Is Surprisingly Fun

One of the coolest parts of owning a system like this is simply watching life happen.

Drop in your seeds (after prepping them... don't worry we'll help).

Add your nutrients.

Keep the water where it needs to be.

Then... within the first week, you'll often start noticing seedlings emerging, depending on what you've planted. Flowers are cute, but (to me) a food source is even better for such a system.

Right now, our little indoor garden includes:

  • ๐Ÿฅ’ Mini cucumbers
  • ๐Ÿซ‘ Green peppers
  • ๐Ÿ… Tomatoes
  • ๐Ÿ“ Strawberries

Not every seed is appropriate for a countertop hydroponic system, of course. Plants that mature into large shrubs or trees need far more space than a unit like this can provide. I'm just keeping it real.

The key is choosing crops that naturally thrive in compact hydroponic environments.

As your plants continue growing, you simply raise the LED light using the telescoping support.

The system provides three dedicated growing modes:

๐ŸŒฑ Seedling

๐ŸŒฟ Vegetative

๐ŸŒธ Bloom

Each stage helps provide lighting appropriate for different phases of plant development. Just use the timer accordingly. I won't leave you scratching your head on what to do as far as seed prep goes:

 One Garden... or Five?

Here's where things get awesome and do I dare say... life changing?

Nothing says you have to stop at one system. You can add more when you're good and ready.

Imagine having:

  • One system dedicated to herbs.
  • Another filled with lettuces.
  • Another growing strawberries.
  • Another producing peppers.
  • Another reserved for tomatoes.

Before long... the raised bar top of your kitchen counter starts looking like the produce department at your local grocery store with pesticide-free goodness able to decrease the grocery bill. This isn't a new concept, but it has been scaled down to a system you can actually use in your home. Trust me, there are hydroponic farms out there... gettin' it in, but at a higher price tag.

"There are only a few drawbacks to growing hydroponically. The main one is the initial setup cost. Hydroponic systems can be a bit pricier than growing in soil. But these systems often pay for themselves over time in terms of efficiency and long-term yields, as you can grow more strawberries this way." - Lorin Nielsen | Epic Gardening

I can agree with this, because a hydroponic system will cost more than you buying seeds or buying a potted strawberry plant... but this smaller scaled system won't break the bank. This consumer friendly product is a fraction of the cost compared to a hydroponics farm.

 An Unexpected Bonus

Here's something I didn't really think about until I started using it.

The LED grow light itself produces enough light that, if it's positioned in the right spot, you may not need to keep additional lights on while you're spending time in that area.

Now, let's be realistic—it isn't a replacement for your home's lighting if you need to read a label while standing at a distance. But if you're already running the grow light as part of your gardening routine, it can provide useful illumination, which may let you leave another light off. For example, mine is sitting on the bar top, and since I turn it on at 7pm... I don't have to turn on the kitchen or living room light.

Nothing wrong with shaving a little off the light bill.

 Should You Buy One?

If you've been curious about gardening but didn't know where to begin, this is honestly one of the easiest entry points I've come across. I saw the larger options years ago, and wanted one bad... but not at the price tag they were being sold at that time. I forget the brand, but I planned to circle back one day.

It doesn't require digging up the backyard.

You don't need land at all... or perfect weather.

Just a little counter space, some seeds, water, and nutrients.

For around $39.99, it's a small investment that can teach valuable skills while producing herbs and produce you can actually enjoy.

Another Big Reason For This Article

Food security isn't something most of us think about until circumstances force us to. Whether you're looking to save a little money on fresh herbs, teach your kids how plants grow, or simply enjoy the satisfaction of harvesting something you raised yourself, the NEEWER Basics Hydroponics Growing System offers an approachable way to get started.

You don't have to become a full-time gardener overnight. Start with one countertop system. Learn what grows well. Get familiar with the process. Then, if the gardening bug bites you, expand from there and decrease the dependency.

As Captain Planet used to say... "The power is yours!" ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’š
