Los Angeles (July 18, 2023) – Today, Square Enix® and TAITO, in collaboration with Google, launched Space Invaders: World Defense which incorporates the Streetscape Geometry* API, a new feature of Google’s ARCore Geospatial API and the latest augmented reality (AR) technology on Google Play™ and the App Store®. Recognized by Guinness World Records in 2020 as the Longest running video game series and celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, SPACE INVADERS is now available as a completely new AR game.
 
About Space Invaders: World Defense
45 years after its initial launch, SPACE INVADERS have struck again! Now is the time to fight together with players from across the world to protect Earth. Experience an immersive AR shooter that blends the classic game with a new dimension as you soar through an augmented reality world and take on the Invaders emerging from the shadows and around every corner.
 
Players will earn points by exploring their neighborhoods and defeating the Invaders they encounter. Players can unlock special power-ups, participate in area-specific rankings, and share gameplay images and AR selfies on their social channels.


Space Invaders: World Defense is powered by Google’s ARCore Geospatial API which instantly designs an engaging model onscreen that blends AR and 3D from the nearby environment, including buildings, bridges, and other architectural elements around the player. It also adapts to the layer’s real-world location, time, and local weather for immersive gameplay.

*Streetscape Geometry: It is possible to acquire 3D model data of buildings within a 100m radius of the user's current location. This function allows AR objects to be hidden and visible (i.e. occlusion expression), to reflect on buildings in real space, and to attach AR objects to specific buildings, enabling the development of highly immersive AR content that blends into real space.

I know the environments in this game help you get immersed, but imagine this game having tracks laid out in your living room, dorm room or office. That would be sick... in the totally awesome way, because not only will it give you the slot car action in a game... it would take it to the next level of being closest to its real life setting. Anyway... on to news from the source! 


TINY TRAX RACES ONTO PLAYSTATION VR
Studio behind Velocity 2X announces new online multiplayer VR slot racer billed as
'Micro Machines meets Scalextric' * Epic racing in a tiny world!
Award-winning Brighton-based studio FuturLab has announced Tiny Trax, a stunning new slot racing game for PlayStation VR.

Set for release this summer, Tiny Trax sees childhood imaginations come to life as tiny cars boost around your body, jump overhead and drift around bends on a virtual slot racing track just inches from your face.

Importantly, a player’s viewpoint of the game mimics that of a child surrounded by a giant toy racing track inside each virtual world, which creates an extremely comfortable and satisfying experience.

Boasting online multiplayer functionality for up to four players, Tiny Trax features 12 tracks across three environments – Tropical, Fire & Ice and Outer Space – with six vehicles to choose from.

The music has been composed by leading video game composer Joris de Man, whose previous work includes Horizon: Zero Dawn, Killzone and FuturLabs’ own Velocity 2X.

Tiny Trax will be available for hands-on demo at Sony’s pre-E3 press event next month (Monday June 12th), on the show floor during E3 and with a roll-out in Europe and North America expected this summer.

The game is the brainchild of game designer Dave Gabriel, who came up with the concept when he was a game tester at FuturLab. Backed by FuturLab’s management team, Gabriel took on the challenge of designing Tiny Trax from the ground up – covering everything from the controls, to the levels, to deciding trophies. He has since been promoted to game designer.

“We’re delighted to announce Tiny Trax – it’s a game that will appeal to players of all ages, allowing them to dive straight in and recreate the thrill of slot racing in immersive virtual environments,” said FuturLab MD James Marsden. “In addition, it’s a great testament to the team here at FuturLab – particularly Dave Gabriel – that Tiny Trax will be demonstrated alongside titles from industry heavyweights at Sony’s E3 booth.”


Is VR here to stay or is it just an expensive fad?

It's hard to determine whether or not VR is here to stay... on a more consistent basis, but i'll continue after you check out JackaJax2Cents on VR. Oh, by the way... I went to a friends party yesterday that didn't end until early (today), so it literally feels like I've been to a full time heavy labor job, but this post was going to make it no matter what or I wouldn't be... RkRk!


Just looking at the fact that you have to put something on your head... is one of the things that makes me personally wonder and question if its going to be a long term thing. It's not a group experience when you're placing something over your eyes... at least from what I know (though viewers can see things on an alternate screen).

From a personal standpoint, I have a low tolerance for wearing hats and even eye-wear for an extended period of time and... I game for an extended period of time. I say that to say... comfort is extremely important when it comes to considering VR headsets (for me) and has to rival the technology if such tech is going to be used for an extended period of time.

As Jack mentioned in the video... Outlast would be a sick VR experience for fans of survival horror games (which I wonder if some could take such gaming when it comes to their heart, especially with the added gaming vests out there). First person games would be right at home on VR, so I could see that being a new home for a lot of shooters especially... while I could also see it being a place for puzzle games and racing. I don't really see every game being worth a VR experience (and I won't call any out) but that doesn't make them bad... I just think i'd be interested in playing some games in VR (perhaps AR).

Anyway, I look forward to seeing the various ways VR & AR can be experienced... and as long as there is plenty of content to enjoy, the price comes down to... (hmmm, I don't know... what's the word? Oh yeah...) "Affordable" (when it comes to some), and games don't require much to go VR... (which some software is said to be that simple), it should be good (at least for awhile). I'd expect there to be more than enough VR action to soak in this e3.


+1, Share, Subscribe and... Game on! Oh... speaking of "game on", HITMAN gameplay is going up sooner than later, busy sort of... happens and... kinda pushes things off. It's coming though (and maybe, just maybe... a whole lot more). Hahaha! The game's fantastic, but I like to kick back and watch Blu play... while I eat all the cereal! :p
