The prehistoric duo is back in action as Spear & Fang set sail on a new adventure in season 2, but does it hold up to what made season 1 great? Let's find out!
I have to give props to the artists because they knew how to showcase the emotion well. I loved seeing the huge colorful jellyfish in this initial episode and I'd love a lithograph of that scene. They should definitely consider creating such things for collector's editions, like a great scene from each season (wink wink). This would make for one great-looking video game with amazing animation.
Story: Anyway, all is calm for the most part in this first episode until the prey came out to play. This included a freaking megalodon... and at this point, in true Primal fashion, you know it was... about to go... down.
Trust and believe episode 1 doesn't disappoint, and definitely usher's you into an amazing and somewhat mythological season with a left-field entry.
The duo gets separated at some point and it places them in a very interesting situation where they were on two opposing sides, you'll have to check that out. I think the way the overall situation played out was quite interesting, and regardless of the lack of words you can find in this show... one thing I appreciate is the ability they have to say certain things without saying anything at all.
You can expect completely new experiences for sure that take things in a not-so-prehistoric direction, but based on where things left off in season 1... when Mira was captured, I was curious about what I'd see.
Episode 5... is interesting. It's a change of pace... filler to show the primitive side of the modern man in colonial times, but I probably would've tucked that in as some sort of extra so that wouldn't eat up an episode. It is what it is I suppose, because episode 6 got us back on track with a battle that was bound to happen based on what occurred in episode 4. By the way, I like the way episode 4 wrapped up because it made the antagonist think twice about their treacherous ways. I won't reveal what you will see in episode 6, but if you were paying attention in earlier episodes... you will pretty much assume what the deal was. I put it together when Fang was sleeping in the cave.
Episode 7 might piss you off a bit if you aren't paying attention... because it isn't in Spear & Fang fashion at all, but there's a reason for it. The justification will be revealed twice in this episode, and greater understanding will emerge in part 2 of The Colossaeus, as Mythology emerges with revenge in mind.
The pace of season 2 was pretty good aside from the last episode, but when you see it, it will be justifiable after the final boss battle. Things got a little weird towards the end but I won't drop any spoilers, just keep in mind that the dwelling was wide open and Spear was in a situation. I'm curious as to what season 3 is going to look like based on how season 2 ended. Good stuff.
Overall, season 2 is amazing and showcases why Primal is an Emmy Award Winner. Just be warned, this isn't for children and contains uncensored content better reserved for ages 17+.
Audio: When it comes to the audio, you will certainly enjoy the suspense delivered via the music and sound effects. You get quite a bit of tribal-like music, along with some variety when facing one of the more dangerous antagonists this season. Season 2 also features DTS-HD Master Audio English 5.1.
Price + Extras: Price-wise, you can get Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal: The Complete Second Season for $29.98 on Blu-ray & $24.98 on DVD. I think the sweet spot would be $5 less in my opinion, but... luckily you can get it for the price I feel is much more fitting... here.
